It doesn't ruin it, but it definitely makes it less memorable because you always remember the ending as its the last thing you see...

The ending for Death Note really ruined it for me tbh.
My friend said "Hey man, watch Death Note, but whatever you do... DO NOT WATCH THE LAST EPISODE!"
And I guess you all know how that song and dance goes.
Haven't watched it since.

And Claymore's ending wasn't 'Bad' persay, but it was incredibly anti-climatic for me.
Still probably going to watch it again at a later date when I run out of anime to watch again.

It does for me at least. Though I'm usually okay with most ending. I've only had one show's ending I really hate and that was Magikano.

Watched Magikano over the last two days. Wow that ending sucked. Renders it literally the most pointless anime series of all time, and depressing as hell if you think about what it actually means for the characters and the entire world.

Why yes, of course it matters! A proper ending is the pay off of a show. It's the moment when you cash in your accumulated chip's and reward points and collect the shit that really matters, the prize.

For me, Fist of the North Star had the perfect ending. A kind of ending that shows to me how truly bad Gurren Lagann's ending was. Before this, Gurren Lagann essentially had an annoyingly stupid ending, but now it's bad. Because I've seen the light man! Raoh litterally punched the sky so damn hard, light appeared. Look at this!

Now, i'm being rather vauge and shit, but....just go watch Fist of the North Star.

And not Ken 2, that's like, the follow up series that's also Fist of the North Star, but not. Ken 2 is like Dragonball GT, don't watch it. DON'T FUCKIN%!#@%@#%!

ANYHOW, Fist of the North Star ends on a happy note. No saddness or grieving or "We sacrificed soooooo much to get here...was it worth it?" bullshit.
I saw Guilty Crown, Mirai Nikki, Claymore, Death Note...all those guys. I've seen the works man, THE WORKS. More works than that, less works. I know the endings those shows had.

Those were crap endings, for crap writers, with crap for meaning. They were book ends! Moments that the show was dropped, some are moments in which the author would like to come back and fix it up a little, perhaps present it better. Some are just horrid. I like to call Guilty Crown out for the shear level of blatant stealing it does, not a single original bone in it's body. It's just moving along with it's Generic brown haired guy playing out like Shinji Ikari, meating a Vocaloid version of Rei, a Wheelchair'ed Asuka, and even a god damn Char clone! I've not even started on Light's guest staring role as Not-so-generic friend #1 and the random appearance of Rivel from Code Geass.
Oh yeah, and Kuroneko was in it too, i almost forgot about her.

And Mirai Nikki the follow up to Guilty Crown in a few ways, but it's single original bone was the amazing Gasai Yuno. She was the outright backbone of Mirai Nikki, carrying the damn show on it's back.

But back to endings, Fist of the North Star was straight solid in it's ending. It completed all it's story arc's, completed it's character development, gave us a satisfying ending for the show itself. I'm talking a fists-flying ultimate Kung Fu fighting dude, their fists were fast as lightning!

A lot of shows take the strong open-ended endings for Granted. Look at Dragonball, every ending was an open ended ending. The kind that a show could just end on, a strong end, but could be picked up again. Goku defeats King Piccolo, THE DAY IS SAVED! Goku defeats Piccolo Junior! HE GETS MARRIED THE END! Goku defeats Freeza on the planet Namek, AND THE SHOW ENDS!
Gohan defeats Cell, the end!
Majin Buu was defeated THE END!

Dragonball was a show of book ends that could be picked up at any point. Those are strong endings man. Endings that can pick it up, but doesn't have to. The character's have completed their story endings and the day was saved.

Man.....a good ending will elevate a show. You just have to find those good endings.

Meh, not really. If the journey was good and I enjoy the characters a lot, unless the ending is something like it was all just a dream or alternate universe, then it does not bother me if the end is not as great as the other parts for most shows. It might leave a bad taste in my mouth at the time but rarely does it sour my overall experience.

I believe that conclusion to a story must fit the journey that viewer is making so that they fill satisfied with show they are watching, these 180 turns at the end or an unnecessary plot twist that only hurts it no matter how good the art/characters/music is. good example (Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood) bad example (Izion Saga DT)

Endings does matter to me especially if it's the sole reason that'd ruin an awesome anime. But it varies dependently on the anime itself and as to how it's produced or has a different route if it has a manga as a base.

If the last episode is a cliffhanger or it just stops, I feel cheated. I've wasted time on an anime that's not complete. Yet, I don't want to see the ending first and spoil it.

As for just bad endings....
A really bad analogy would be like having fun baking a cake, but when it's done it tastes like crap. Yes, you had fun, but in the end, it's crap.

Then there's something like Haruka no Himitsu. Two seasons of excellent cuteness and then it just kinda stops.....unless you happen to know that it really wraps up in the OVAs, which you don't see when watching on TV. You have to go to the website and watch them. And the quality of them REALLY sucks, but at least you get an ending.

I'm pretty sure it's possible that it could, but I've never seen a show with an ending bad enough to do that, I can't remember any shows with bad endings honestly, then again I don't have much reason to remember a show I didn't like.

Manga though, Usagi Drop could have been ruined for me if the ending went differently than how it did, so I expect the same could apply to anime. Fortunately it did have a good ending to me.

If it doesn't end properly because it was cancelled or not continued (The 12 Kingdoms) I can understand. A bad ending can really a really easy to take a great anime down a few notches. Examples being Nadesico, and the many versions of Eva. A great ending can really enhance an anime. Some of my favorites are Blue Seed (just perfect), hack//sign and the final Mother's Rosario episode in SAO II.

If anything it makes the anime more interesting.

i was gonna start watching black bullet lmao but maybe i wont...

so yeah, bad endings ruin an anime for me. if an anime isn't going to properly wrap things up, what is the point of following through with it just to be left hanging? i hate that feeling so i try to avoid animes with bad endings, if i know there is one.
