I dunno. I've never been in a situation that required above average driving skills.

I thought the title looked off to me. Think I get why now.

Google's driverless cars have been brought up.
I am 100% in favor of self driving cars.

Please tell me that the snowbirds aren't the average driver...
If they are, yes, I'm far superior.
I don't live in places with snow for a reason, namely I don't want to deal with it, but it's one reason why I'd like to move back to AZ, 4 hours away. As for driving in snow, I can drive a rwd truck better in snow in Virginia than most of the fw/awd nitwits can.

I'd still like to know what an "average driver" is, because aside from computer simulations, or an automated driving machine, I don't think there is such a thing.

Well to me, an okay definition would be a person who's driving practices put the expected value of their losses from accidents lower than the median expected loss of the population they're in, after controlling for the amount they drive.

So a better driver gets in fewer and less severe accidents.

I thought it'd be easier if people could define it themselves, rather than relying on an arbitrary definition I've made.
It makes asking the question easier and avoids complicated stuff.

If 5 was average, I'd put myself at a 7.

I have only caused 1 small accident in my 10 years of driving. I have been in 3 all together though. I don't think the 2 others really count for driving skill because I was dormant at a red light both times when someone didn't break in time and hit me. The first one was my fault, I scratched a parked car because I underestimated the turn. Luckily no one was around so I managed to get away without any trouble. That was shortly after I got my license, never happened again.

Other than that I have never gotten a speeding ticket. I got one warning for not completely stopping at a stop sign, and one warning because I didn't have a license plate attached to the front of my car (only to the back).

Considering nobody in my family trusts my driving skills.....I'd say below average. Lol.

Very well, but an average driver definition to me would be someone who could avoid an accident, one who can drive reasonable and prudent enough, even with basic distractions, and one who knows their duties and responsibilities in their privilege of driving. To my definition, I'd be an average driver. The idea of average does require a baseline over a random consensus of what people might think. There should be a NHSI baseline, or something from one of the safety or insurance institutes that defines average.
Johnny Vtech may think that he's above average just because he can zip back and forth through the freeway at rush hour while texting his buddies and causing the "average" driver to cause an unnecessary accident by braking for his below average driver's ass. Yes and no, this is a knock on Honda drivers, I know you're not all bad, but you got the little boy ricers who give you all the bad name.

If fewer and less severe accidents are being part of the average driver, then yes, I'd be above average since I've safely avoided potential accidents caused by average or below average drivers even at higher speeds in varied weather conditions. Even able to maintain vehicle control in slick conditions when a "safer" vehicle driver couldn't. Then again, I'm in my first auto that has traction control standard, and I typically turn it off because I've never driven with a crutch, but I know that it is still partially active. I will admit that I can be an unsafe driver if drivers are holding up traffic patters, but I'll still use prudent decision on lane changes and increases or decreases of speed.

i think im a pretty good driver.
long distances, no problem.
quick reflexes have saved me from a few vary bad 'accidents'.
know things like weight transfer, body roll, torque vs hp, the feel of the car as its about to lose grip, not to not get stuck in the snow.
i pretty much live to drive. right now my fav car is a little 55hp monster. every day is race day when you top out at 90mph ha ha.

I'm just an average driver, but I like taking the hardest routes because less people take it. Almost drove off a cliff, but still a decent driver.

I'm simply curious, how many of you think you're an above average driver?
Personally I'm not a fan of driving, so I'm probably worse than average.
You never know though, perhaps you could share interesting tips for driving better.
Something outside the usual anyways.

Just don't hit my car or people and you're okay with me.

Sorry, I defined an above average driver rather than an average one. I'd still say the average driver is a person who you would expect to suffer the median expected loss after you adjust for the amount they drive based on the way they drive.

I'd think finding a industry definition of average would be a bit challenging, since there are all sorts of things to be averaged in all different types of ways. Of course I have no issue with saying the average driver is a reasonably competent person, no disagreement, just correcting myself.

I'm an average driver. I'd even say above average at my age. It's because I live far from home and always have to go through the whole rough traffic in the city to get to the highway... and then home of course.
I even participate in carpooling as a driver and when my fellow passengers feel safe it's a good sign for me being a decent driver :)
Tips.. well, mind the speed limit, don't let the people you're taking with you distract you and last but not least - practice a loooot!! and in every situation. You could also volunteer as the designated driver sometimes.

When I started driving I was bad. Really bad. But now it's been like 5 years then and I'm used to it now. I'd rate myself an 8.5 out of 10 for good driving though. I never bumped anything, never got demerited, never got pulled over by cops for speeding since I don't do it.

There are worse drivers out there that have been driving longer than me. And they are a pain.... Yes pick-up truck drivers I hate you guys.
