I don't think they really care. What I do on my spare time is none of their business anyway.

Haha, yeah, that's fair. My parents don't really mind either, although they keep thinking I'm watching 'hentai' when it's just 'ecchi'... It's hard to explain sometimes

My mum always thought anime = porn so it was a bit hard getting hold of a lot of anime, but I never really cared what my parents thought tbh.

My parents don't understand it.. Dad thinks its incredibly violent and he's right for the one we watched together (Cowboy Bebop)
Mom just doesn't get why an adult would want to watch cartoons (Irresponsible Captain Tylor)

And my other siblings have outgrown it, thinking that its become too formulaic and predictable and as such boring, also they feel that anime started to pander to western tastes and that turned them off although I'm not sure beyond Bottle Fairy what they were talking about since anime sells for so much less money here in the states. My sister has moved onto Korean Dramas. My brother has moved onto art, music, and game creation for hobbies.

I still watch anime, but I've never marathoned back-to-back series like my siblings have. Since all of us were involved in it at one time it feels weird to have them look down on it and disapprove of it. I'm kind of the last man standing in my family, so-to-speak, when it comes to watching anime.

My parents don't mind me watching anime, as it's just another form of entertainment on TV. They tease me a little, but they don't disagree with it. My mother even tells me that I should take Japanese as it'd be a cool language to learn.

Being 48 years old means I don't have the 'protective parent' issues that many of you seem to be dealing with, but I'm sure you can imagine what I DO get:- 'You're too old to be watching cartoons' etc, etc. from family, friends, colleagues, and anyone else who tries to get in their 10cents worth! I've given up trying to enlighten them on the merits of anime, and they have (almost) given up the hassles but it still annoys me sometimes, especially since I haven't got anyone else around who shares my enthusiasm. BUT it doesn't dampen mine, I'll be partaking 'til I'm blind, deaf and/or senile! (which, now that I think about it, may not be far off!)

I am in the exact same boat, being 48 as well. It helps that my wife likes anime as well and a lot of series we watch together. Oddly enough I never get that too old business. My mother tried once and my response was to bring My Neighbor Totoro for her to watch. Halfway through she was asking where could she get it for my sister's kids.

but yes, some parents should learn to shut their cakeholes, sit down and watch. Of course then you might run into your dad saying "Hey, lets cosplay together!" Those are the problems of victory.

They don't know. Apart from my brother. I suspect some members of my family will be swayed to easily by stereotypes, and either call me a boob-lusting pervert, or a kid watching cartoons.

Besides. Some of these family members watch typical MTV drool, so I secretly believe I hold the higher ground...

From the wife....
"BOB! YOU ARE 50 YEARS OLD! WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO GROW UP AND QUIT WATCHING THIS STUFF?"
My reply "Sssshhhhhhh, not now, the main protagonist is powering up and about to destroy the other mecha suit."
or the reply is this "Not now dear, the Red head is about to show off her panties...er...i mean i got to go make supper for the family."
