Magical girl genre. Do you prefer the old ones that were lighthearted or the new ones that are more dark.

I had watch http://www.crunchyroll.com/shugo-chara Witch is more lighthearted and enjoy it. Then watch http://www.crunchyroll.com/puella-magi-madoka-magica And fell in love with the genre. Then I watch http://www.crunchyroll.com/yuki-yuna-is-a-hero http://www.crunchyroll.com/fatekaleid-liner-prisma-illya Witch I like to think is more of a hybrid in lighthearted and dark themes. And in really enjoy it.

So my question is what type of Magical girl themes you either prefer or think is better for the genre. lighthearted themes, dark themes, hybrid of both lighthearted and dark themes. I personally will like more of romance and dark themes with lighthearted on it. I had no idea if that will work but I will like to see one,one day.

I like them all.

CCS, Nanoha, Makoda, Fate/Kaleid, YuYuYu, etc. The whole genre is really enjoyable for me, one of my top three anime genres in all honesty.

Definitely hybrid and dark ones. I'm not the biggest fan of the lighthearted ones like Sailor Moon Crystal.

My personally tops genre are. Magical girl. Seinen. Harem or reverse Harem. Side note about the Harem or reverse harem. I only enjoy if there a real reason for the characters to like the MC. Male or female. Otherwise I turn my brain off.

I more or less agree on that. But I like to think YUKI YUNA IS A HERO. Did a good job of balancing both of those themes. Sailor Moon Crystal. While It contain some dark themes, a times it feel like it putting one foot on the lighthearted themes. While dark themes barely putting it on it. I don't dislike sailor moon crystal but I think it could be better.

I like none of them.

I hate transformation scenes that take up half of each episode. And they're all the same darn scenes over and over. Well I guess it's not any different than a shounen mc yelling for 59 episodes for his powerup lol.

I think it we need a series that dark. Because if you're going to use magic, you need to pay the price for it. That's just me though

I'm a big fan of mahou shoujo, mecha, and iyashikei myself. I could enjoy those genres forever.

Seinen's not a genre though, it's a demographic.

About the Seinen's. You may want to complain to CR, because when you go to the genre section. They clearly had it under genre.

I hold Heartcatch Precure and Card Captor Sakura, which are more light hearted, in higher esteem than the "dark" and "gritty" ones personally. I enjoy both as long as they're well done though.

In the words of AK. You need to watch more anime Sailor Moon Crystal is honestly probably one of the weakest magical girl shows I've watched, if not THE weakest, so don't judge all light-hearted ones based off that.

Are you talking to me? It's fan art of Nico Yazawa from Love Live! (an anime about idols) in her Cutie Panther(music single) outfit.

This is the full pic

and official art from the game in case this is where you've seen it from

I'm usually not too enthusiastic about lighthearted Magical Girl anime (Shugo Chara being a huge exception), but I have mostly enjoyed some of the darker ones we've been getting lately. Beyond my personal preference, I think it'd be good to have a balance of both in the future since there seem to be plenty of fans for both types, and having two (well, I guess three; I forgot about hybrids) styles to choose from should (hopefully) keep the genre from becoming too stagnant.
