Magical girl genre. Do you prefer the old ones that were lighthearted or the new ones that are more dark.

Those are extremely tame works compared to the stuff I'm into.

Okay, now I am curious. Nothing could beat Dustmania Grotesque. Or Mon Musu Quest.

Edit: No, I'm not into such works. Except certain parts of Mon Musu Quest. Centaur girls make me so ronery.

Light done right, mostly. Though I'm not big on magical girl stuff to begin with. I did like Wixoss which is a bit darker, while not going full grim dark.

What is the anime about without spoiler please.

I'm watching WIXOSS right now, almost done it too. Here is the MAL link: http://myanimelist.net/anime/22273/Selector_Infected_WIXOSS

Teenage girls basically come across talking cards and become Selectors. They use their cards to duel in an alternate dimension where the cards take physical form. The selectors are told that their cards will grant them one wish if they win enough battles but if they lose three times their wish won't be granted. However, that's not the whole story and there are a lot more to their wishes then they are told.

I prefer dark to light in this genre, but you have to have one for the other to have its appeal, y'know?

Original Sailor Moon is light-hearted, for example, but it definitely has its dark bits.

WIXOSS isn't mahou shoujo. It's a card game anime.

Spoilered for off-topic.

I can only watch the darker ones personally, nothing wrong with the lighter ones but they just don't spark the same interest that something like Madoka Magica does.

I prefer dark themes in pretty much all the anime I watch, but as far as Mahou Shojo goes I've only been able to stick with the darker series. I loved Madoka, Yu Yu Yu was great fun, and My HiME is one of my favorites despite the awful ending.

I also really like Cute High Earth Defense Love, a parody of the magical girl genre featuring magical boys. I enjoy comedies where the characters are very aware of how ridiculous their own circumstances are, and the dialogue in this one is great.

would probably say I like the newer, darker mahou shoujos. my favorite is Nanoha, which is a good mix of both light hearted and dark. I also really enjoyed YuYuYu which also had a mix of light hearted and dark story, but had a relatively happy ending.

I do enjoy the various Madoka series (not just the anime, I've read the Another Story and Kazumi Magica manga as well), and while I like them, I don't enjoy them as much as I did Nanoha or YuYuYu.

Hmm. The anime or the manga? (And, if the anime, how do you feel about Mai Otome?)

The anime, I looked into reading the manga and found primarily bad reviews so I passed on it. Have you read it? Should I change my mind?

I enjoyed Mai Otome, but not as much as Mai Hime. The characters just didn't grab me as much, although I have to say that 'Hoshi ga Kanaderu Monogatari' is one of my favorite anime songs of all time.

I love them all. I'm a huge fan of Magical Girl animes. I grew up with them and still enjoy watching them.
I love Tokyo Mew Mew and Shugo Chara as light animes
But then I fell in love with the in between state of dark and light like Yuki Yuna.

Madoka was awesome, and I've been dying to see a darker CCS for quite literally a decade now.

Wixoss was good, but it was more of a girl's battle game thing than anything else. It reminded me of Angelic Layer (also done by CLAMP, but where as CCS, Tsubasa, and xxxHolic are one world, Angelic layer, and Chobits were of another. Characters and stories inheriting the same universe created by the writers was more common back in the day)Both were excellent, though Wixoss didn't pull its punches as much (which is why I love Card Captor Sakura, but have been longing for a darker version for so long... Clamp ALWAYS pulls its punches). Also mising from the list is Pretear, which was also on the darker side...

I think that's why I prefer the darker and grittier magical girls. The lighter ones are too childish, and the hybrids tend to hold back too much. Unfortunately, some of the darker ones could, theoretically, be dark for the sake of being dark (thinking some older hentai titles there...and remembering back in the day where some hentai titles were actually well written, and the line was a little more blurred than it is today... but that's a digression), and dark for the sake of dark isn't so great because there's sometimes little story, however, Madoka seems to be the genre starter for dark magical girl stuff (although there were a few before), and I think it'll still be a little while before we get gory magical girls for the sake of gory magical girls.

You may, MAY enjoy Angelic Layer, if you can find it.

The darker ones are so gimmicky, and the market changes.

They become another male-otaku exploitation genre thats based on inverting (but not subverting) tropes, and it's just kind of lame.

(All opinions stated are of course opinions)
