Is 4K ever coming to Crunchyroll?

CR can barely handle 1080p without stuttering every 3 seconds. So no, I doubt it's coming for a very long time, if at all.

I hope not, I can just about stream 1080p as it is, and thats if I'm lucky someone isn't hogging the bandwidth. So i mostly go 720p.

i dont even think most shows are made in 4k so it would just be an upscale that takes up more bandwidth

There are zero 4k anime period. In fact, there's only 4 1080p anime made to date. The 1080p you watch on Crunchyroll is just upscaled.

The issue here is that the anime would have to be made 4k. I don't know about you, but very few are. 1080 is the standard for high quality anime, even on DVD. There are still many that are designed for 720, but made into 1080 just to say that it is 1080 when all they did is increase the resolution, not the quality. And for streaming, unless you lived in Korea, Finland, or Sweden, you likely won't even be able to make practical use of it. Internet connection, especially in the US is far too slow.

the general anime (TV version which Cr uses) is made with 480p quality . Only for BD, producers can give more. CR's 1080P is just a video resolution improvement so I don't think they can afford to have a 4k anime because in japan don't make this kind of video. (it's too expensive)

4k is not widespread enough for consideration at this point. As 4k becomes affordable to the common consumer, then this will be a topic for consideration.

it sucks to have such a nice Sony 4K UHD but barely any content to actually watch. The only 4K provider right now is Netflix and the very limited selection in UHD content makes me want to kick myself for picking up a UHD TV so early. I noticed that CR has been better with 1080P or at least at home now that TWC is finally offering better bandwidth so no hiccups while watching on TV. While I'm on the topic can anyone tell me why there is no CR app available for my Sony UHD Smart TV???

I can only dream of the hopefully not to distant day when I can stream anime in 4K and see all my waifus in glorious UHD

From an animated video perspective, there is no need yet for 4K unless you have a native 4K monitor, and at that point, you have a dedicated super high end gaming machine you regularly stream on or a professional graphics or programming workstation.

Hell, 720 itself is a huge upgrade from 480 if you full screen on a 1080 monitor. I just don't see the practicality of implementing something that would require 20Mbps to make use of anyway considering 60% of US telecoms companies don't even bother to provide most of their customers with lines that can maintain that sort of speed constantly on a wide scale (at least until the FCC starts throwing it's weight around with the new Title 2 reclassifications.)

That's years away from happening (if it ever does).

No anime that I can think of is being produced in 4k. Actually, only a handful of movies are being made in 4k if memory serves me right. I'm not even sure if traditional anime would actually come out well at 4k since it requires so much extra detail and mistakes will be all the more obvious.

Very, very few people have TV's and monitors that can even display 4k, as well. It's still a gimmick that's out of reach and pointless for most people, so even if anime was being produced at 4k most people wouldn't be able to watch it at that resolution.

Finally, until the internet infrastructure and telecom companies invest in upgrading and get rid of data caps, streaming something at 4k is going to be impossible for a large chunk of North Americans. Streaming a 24 minute anime could completely blow someone's monthly data cap, and for that episode to buffer could potentially take hours. That's without telecoms throttling download speed.

In 5-10 years we may see 4k streaming start to show up and be viable for the majority, but we're not in that place right now.

I wonder if 4k would even be worth it for most animes (once 4k is the standard). I mean, there isn't much difference in anime between 720p and 1080p, I hear.

why did we skip 2k and going straight to 4k? anywho, 4k would mean a mega premium membership else wise they wont be able to maintain and is there even any series out in 4k yet?

4K is useless unless you sit 4CM away from your monitor and/or have a massive that's really close.
