Heroic Age is a space mecha show, not the best story but I found it entertaining enough to finish.

Gargantia on the Verdurous planet began in space although for most of the story it's an earth-bound mecha, but it has a good story.

There's one I can't remember the name of, a bunch of kids are sent to a satellite for some kind of class and it is captured by terrorists, then things get super weird....

Maybe I missed it, but has no one recommend Knights of Sidonia? It's basically Attack on Titan in space.

i second heroic age.
its alot of mecha, kinda, but alot of fleet battles as well.

also, bodacious space pirates. i loved this anime, it has real world physics involved. dub was meh, even by dub standards, but the audio was eargasmic.

Just watched the first episode of Bodacious Space Pirates. Seems like it's pretty close to what I'm looking for, and seeing as you recommended it like you did, Imma definitely be watching some anime for a few days.

Though I could've sworn somebody else recommended it, too, in this thread..
Maybe it was just my subconscious telling me that, at some point, I'd not noticed a space anime I might like? Yea, that sounds like something my subconscious would do.

A good "down-to-Earth" space anime would be Planetes. In a similar vein there is Freedom.

The only one i've personally seen is Bodacious Space Pirates. Don't let that god awful name fool you though, I actually thought it was pretty good.

Speaking of god awful, there's also Tytania. I think that falls into this category, but i'm not sure. I personally didn't like it at all, so I didn't get too far into it. Thus, I can't say much about it past like the second episode or so - maybe it's actually good? Who knows. Might be worth a try

I'll second this, it's my favorite anime.

Also, Tylor is pretty good for comedy in space. Knights of Sidonia is a good recent one, though it is more sci-fi than realistic.

I went through this, and just about every non-mecha space anime I can think of has been suggested.

If you are willing to live with mecha and harem, another one I can recommend is Vandread. They show does involve spacecraft and visiting alien planets along with using mecha.
