So I've had this thing where I randomly stand still and suddenly realize how much stuff is going on around me. I don't exactly know how to describe it, but it feels like I vanish and realize what the world is actually like. These things have occured infrequently, but most of them have been at my school. It's really weird, thus you might not fully understand the question, but it feels like I find my true self when this happens.

Here's a cool picture to make up if I've wasted your time or if you didn't understand the question. :tongue2:

I hear you. When you stop and just absorb all the noises around you. I've done it before. Helps you focus sometimes. Also, helps you track down what's happening where.

i am NOTORIOUS for doing this.
Case in point. The other day i am standing in line at the grocery store. a 12-ish old boy told his mother it would be faster if they went through the self check out. He then challenged his mother to a race. I turned around and told him he would lose. The reason is his mother has the car keys. The mother laughed. The kids said "Now i know why not to let strangers into my conversations."

It sounds like what is happening is that these moments are times when your mind is still and in the still and calmness you notice things that you did not notice before. I would recomend investigating and persuing this further, if its something you are interested in then ask questions and figure out what it truly is.

To your question... Yes. Though my personal experience differs. For one, this is a constant trouble and By conscious decision I have to step back and close off to blind myself from the "real world" so that things do not get overwhelming. Only occasionally do I ever step back, though. Reasons are, if I open myself to such awareness it leads to alienation, effecting my social and work life in negative ways. In my opinion, most people have spent their life building a wall.. A wall of conformity, or self presentation to meet certain standards and expectations. That wall is reinforced by far too many aspects of modern day life. It is why that old "people are sheep" expression exist, personally I disagree.. People are not sheep, people just like to wear the wool. It is more comfortable then reality...
On that note, Congratulations for realizing you can take that wool off, even if only on occasion.

I'll present another odd question though. Does anyone else ever have moments of perception that seem to distort the world to an extreme? I see red sometimes.. red, like the sun changed to a darker color. In red, people, places, things.. Get uncomfortable. People for example, have a lot of secrets, a lot of things they like to hide, or things that are just not obvious about them without close inspection. These things become more obvious to a point its like "almost" seeing something physical attached to them that gives it away. Places and things work in a similar way to this.
On the bright side, During the red my learning curb seems to vanish so it makes my studies easier, although it does seem to make me incredibly hungry for knowledge and or productive activity. Perception being altered, somehow, seems to open me up to a level of clarity which I find very useful for my writing projects, among st other things... such as avoiding dangerous people.
There are positives, despite how concerning this altered perception thing is. Ah, sometimes I wish I could write it off as "i'm crazy" or.. there is something wrong with me. Can't convince myself that's the case.. Which could mean I'm crazy. Fun.. stuff..

Topic made me think of this:

And yes of course! I don't know about finding true self or anything but ultimately I feel it is a very relaxing pastime. Almost like meditation.

I find that I can do this if I try to focus on the world being 3D. Usually, I perceive the world as a 3D environment which I see in 2D format (thus I can't see around objects). But if I focus on the 3D aspects of everything, then it's like going from scalar to vector qualities and the world seems to expand. It feels pretty taxing after a good while of sitting in that mode though, so I don't generally go into it.

Yours sounds involuntary though. Mine is voluntary, so there is probably a crucial difference in the experience.

When you're masturbating then suddenly you hear a noise. You focus all your senses to figure out if you're going to be discovered or someone is near.
