I'm looking for a show that I can watch with my wife that goes easy on the clique tropes.

While I'm watching she'll either show some interest by asking a question that takes too long to explain or making fun of the silly anime faces character will make.

So I'm looking for something new, maybe something quite like My Little Monster (but with more emotional payoff at the end)

Suggestions must:
- Not have cartoony silly anime faces

- No boobfall, groping, harem, bathhouse episodes, or generally over-proportioned girls (these tropes qualify as porn in her eyes)

- Good story arc that doesn't take forever to develop characters

- Dubs are a plus but not necessary

Also, what was the first anime that you ever got into and why?

Does it have to be new? Anyway's here's some series and shows, some are kinda old...

Terror In Resonance (Series- only subbed) 2014
Psycho-Pass (Series - It has a dub) 2012
The Garden of Words (Film - has dub) 2013
5 Centimeters Per Second (Film- has dub) 2006 or 2007
Cowboy Bebop (Series - has dub) 1998
Kids on The Slope (Series- has dub) 2012
Attack on Titan (Series- has dub) 2013-2014
Hal the movie (Film- has dub) 2013
Spice and Wolf (series- has dub) 2008-2011

All of these have their serious moments, and I feel like they aren't weird. so, there's a chance new viewers won't get turned off.

I'd say The Pet Girl of Sakurasou or Myself; Yourself. Both are really well made

I second (or third) the suggestion for Cowboy Bebop.

Was also going to suggest Toradora (http://www.crunchyroll.com/toradora) because of the satisfying ending, but I can't remember if there was a hot spring/bath episode or not. Great show either way.

Looking through what's streaming on Netflix, I would recommend Eureka 7. It's a long show at 52 episodes, but it is really good as far as romances go, it's also a decent sci-fi action show. There is an animated movie version of it which is sort of like it abridged but with a bit of an altered plot, it's not as good as the series though.

There is a sequel Eureka 7 AO, but I would recommend that you pretend it doesn't exist.

Now that reminds me... Last Exile is also really good with only 26 episodes. Not romance focused like Eureka 7, but it does have a few moments. It's more about family, well that, sky pirates, air ships, and aliens.

There is a second season to that too, it's not as good as the first season but not so bad that I would condemn it's existence.

Steins;Gate (one of my all time favorite series, its extremely mature in its themes and focuses on the theory of time travel by jumping to different world lines)
Evangelion (rebuilds are a bit more enjoyable since they are more action orientated)
Ghost in the shell
Psycho Pass (another one of my all time favorites, its similar to ghost in the shell, but has an emphasis on detective work instead of special forces style take downs)
Zankyou No Terror (one of the hidden gems of the past few seasons, its a story that follows two terrorists, its a real masterpiece)

Agree with Mushishi. It's anime for grownups.

Also, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood because if that doesn't move you you have no heart.
