Something like My Little Monster? I haven't watched that, but it's... romantic comedy? Shoutouts to Pet Girl of Sakura-sou.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

Mushishi - I enjoyed this one a lot. Not sure if it'd be too weird but I may give it a try.

Psycho Pass - Watched the first series, Akane might be too bland of a protagonist, but the story and setting are great.

Cowboy bebop - Great contender, would certainly watch it again for myself.

Attack on Titan - Probably too dark haha

Eureka 7 - Kind of a letdown in the finale imo. Was worth watching overall, but probably not a second time for my sake.

I'll be looking into these others for sure!

As much as I love this show. Like 99% of it is a philosophical debate about the merits of a beneficial dictatorship versus a corrupt democracy. The other 1% is battleship in SPAAACE!

I'm looking for a show that I can watch with my wife that goes easy on the clique tropes.

While I'm watching she'll either show some interest by asking a question that takes too long to explain or making fun of the silly anime faces character will make.

So I'm looking for something new, maybe something quite like My Little Monster (but with more emotional payoff at the end)

Suggestions must:
- Not have cartoony silly anime faces

- No boobfall, groping, harem, bathhouse episodes, or generally over-proportioned girls (these tropes qualify as porn in her eyes)

- Good story arc that doesn't take forever to develop characters

- Dubs are a plus but not necessary

Also, what was the first anime that you ever got into and why?

Does she like live action scifi series?

Firefly is one of her favorites. She also grew up on X-Files, Charmed, and Buffy the Vampire slayer.

If she likes Firefly, then I'd recommend Trigun. It's dubbed, is on both Netflix and Hulu (and probably elsewhere) has a similar sci-fi/western feel to it as Firefly, doesn't have any fan service to speak of, and is a good combination of action, comedy, and drama.

Macross (start with the original or Frontier)

Angel Beats!

Death Note (But that annoying chick - she don't deserve even a name- may be at too trope for your wife)

FMA then watch FMA:B right after

Now and Then, Here and There <-- An anime that shows that anime is more than moe girls with upskirt and cleavage shots! (A true masterpiece in storytelling through anime)

KissXSis <-- JUST KIDDING! Do NOT suggest to her!

I always thought Firefly was kind of like Cowboy Bebop and thought of Mushishi as a sort of Feudal Era X-Files. And the charmed ladies are mahou shoujo

If she likes Buffy because she kicks ass and doesn't like service she might like Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. It has some of the best female role modeling in anime and it's gorgeous.

Fullmetal Alchemist is great for starters and if you want someone to get into Gundam, recommend that person Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which is most likely the reason I got into the franchise (tbh, I like it a lot more than MSG 0079). Tekkaman Blade is also badass.

If Moribito was on here or still on netflix I'd watch that with her.

FMA would take some working up to. It's got the "silly anime faces". Would be great if she can get into it.

We'll probably try Say "I love you" or Toradora for starters.

I would suggest Kids on the Slope if she enjoys music/slice of life. It's one of those anime that does so much right. It's also only 12 episodes so it's an easy watch.
Haibane Renmei is very good as well if she enjoys more philosophical based stories. It's definitely a hidden gem that I believe is in the shadow of Serial Experiments Lain. Serial Experiments Lain is fantastic as well, but I think I prefer Haibane Renmei a bit more.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is another great series. Yeah the animation is very unique, but the story and characters are just brilliant. The Count is hands down one of my all time favorite characters. I highly suggest the dub version for this one. If she enjoys ScFi, stories of revenge, and just an awesome villain or would he be an anti-hero...hmm not sure, but still I definitely recommend this.
Baccano is another fantastic series that I recommend dubbed. It's a gangster anime about immortality, a gang war, and some train monster that kills people . It has a fantastic story and characters. I really like how the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.
Wolf Children is a great anime movie with memorable characters. I think the movie truly captures the love a mother has for her kids.
Perfect Blue is a pretty good psychological Thriller movie and the only anime to truly disturb/scare me

Gankutsuou looks interesting.

Baccano is awesome. Seems like I'd have to look elsewhere to find it atm
