So I'm looking for suggestions (anime or manga) that will make me sad. I love a good tragedy. Romance is good too. Nothing that's got a lot of fan service though. Please and thank you.

Have seen for anime: Toradora, Angel Beats, Your Lie in April, Akame ga Kill, + more that I can't remember.

Have read: Fuuka. I'm fairly new to the manga scene.

Nana and Golden Time. Nagi No Asukara is quite good also. I don't know about you but watching Toradora and Golden Time still gets me every time.

Angel Beats was written by a company called Visual Arts/Key. Basically anything based on their stuff will make you cry like a baby:

Little Busters / Refrain
Clannad / After Story
Kanon (the 2006 anime is the better version)
AIr

The other anime recommendation I'd make is Anohana, for a nice mix of romance, tragedy, and reconciliation.

I wouldn't say the whole series tugs at my heartstrings, but the end of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia always hits me pretty hard. It's got mystery, romance, tragedy, so it might be up your alley. Not a terribly long series, either, easy to marathon in a day.

Oh, by the way, if you're looking for manga recommendations, check out A Silent Voice (Koe no Kitachi; available on CR); fan service-free and the first eight chapters alone will put you through the emotional ringer.

Other manga that are pretty good, dramatic, and fan-service lite (or free): (I'll leave it to you to track them down)

- Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)
- Fruits Basket
- Koisome Momiji
- Watashitachi no Tamara-kun (shares the same author as Toradora)

- Sensei! (If student-teacher relationship doesn't bother you)
- Koi Kaze (If incest doesn't bother you)

There were places in /kimi-ni-todoke-from-me-to-you where I shed a few "happy" tears, not so much from the romance, but

It's already been suggested, but Clannad is full of feels.

Also Anohana.

Thanks for the recommendations everybody. I've seen or read a few of what you've suggested but not the majority. I appreciate it.

Clannad and Clannad After Story. You'll be sure to shed a few waterfalls before you are done with the series.

UGH!!!

For me the list is freaking endless.... of course, tastes will vary and it will depend on what you like....

5 Centimeters per Second (the manga/graphic novel...not so much and anime- the anime was just beautiful to look at; the story I could relate to on so many levels and on a number of occasions almost hit too close to home for comfort)

Ai No Kusabi (the novel and anime adaptation (original 2-part OVAs)---every time I cry like a babe)
The OVA that within the yaoi genre served as my gateway in a sense was Legend of Blue Wolves. It was hentai yaoi, but still the ending just made me lose it.

There's quite a few in the BL department....seems tragedy is a popular trope.
Just watched Silent Mobius (on DVD) recently and there was a scene or two that made me wipe at my eyes a little.
