There's got to be a subtler way to catch predators.

I'm a 8 year old lolicon living alone.

8 year old pedophile?
How disgusting. If you're 20 and are attracted to 12 year olds, you should be in prison.
If you're 8 and are attracted to 12 year olds, you should also be put in prison. Along with all the other pedophiles.

Not sure ecchi / harem shows are really killing the fandom / industry... while they exist and tend to get a lot of attention, they're pretty much the same every season, so I'm pretty bored of them. Can't say for sure but I'm sure a lot of other people agree.

Moé-pig bait, on the other hand...

These are the shows currently in simulcast on CR and their genres (either tagged or by my examination):

That's two out of forty shows which could reasonably count as ecchi, or 5% of CR's current simulcast lineup. This suggests to me that not only is ecchi not killing the anime fandom, it's also barely a blip on the radar. There's a great deal of sexually oriented fan service in anime, and this is partly because sex comedy is common in Japan. But ecchi series themselves, at least as far as CR's simulcasts are concerned, are the exception rather than the rule. An examination of simulcasts on Neon Alley and FUNimation, as well as Hulu's library would probably paint a more complete picture, but I just evaluated 40 shows. It's someone else's turn to gather and examine the data.

Great post, Oni.

Here are the simulcasts on FUNimation this season with genre tag:
Absolute Duo (Action, Fan Service, Fantasy)
Assassination Classroom (Action, Comedy, Sci Fi)
Death Parade (Drama, Horror)
Garo The Animation (Action, Fantasy)
Kamisama Kiss (Comedy, Fantasy,Romance, Supernatural)
Maria the Virgin Witch (Fantasy, Historical)
Shonen Hollywood -Holly Stage For 50- (Bishonen, Drama, Slice of Life)
The Rolling Girls (Action, Comedy)
Tokyo Ghoul (Action, Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Supernatural)
Yatterman Night (Comedy)
Yurikuma Arashi (Drama, Sci Fi, Yuri)

NOTES: Genre tags taken from home tab on individual show pages. Excludes the shows on both CR and FUNi since you already list them above.

A whopping zero titles tagged as ecchi, and I'm sure FUNi would love to market that, in simulcasts this season. That makes 2 out of 51 titles here tagged as ecchi this simulcast season between CR and FUNi. Hardly a case of ecchi having any influence I'd say, considering these account for 51 of 70+ shows airing in Japan this winter season.

As an aside, there is room for debate with the genre tags on some shows. For example, Isuca, Maria the Virgin Witch, and Absolute Duo are tagged with Ecchi on Live Chart. While Testament of Sister New Devil is as well, World Break is not despite being tagged as such on CR. Even affording all of them into the Ecchi category, that's still only 5 of 70+ shows this winter season with ecchi content being a focal point in the show.

More shows not listed here I see on Live Chart (note none have ecchi tags):

Way too many conflate ecchi shows with fanservice. While there can be overlap, they are not one and the same. Ecchi in and of itself has very little effect on anime overall. Sexual based fanservice and certain tropes or archetypes one could argue have become overused and stale, but that's another debate entirely (there are already a myriad of threads devoted to this topic here on CR for those interested in that debate btw).

I have only seen the first episode of Saekano but even that was ecchi.

Also fall into that category.

First of all funi categorizing Yatterman as only comedy is in and of itself high comedy.

Secondly, this ties into a post I keep also making.

Anime is folding in upon itself

It's becoming less and less mainstream more and more by fans and for fans and only relevant to fans.

We see so many ecchi harems because that what the market goes for.

We have harems about making gal games because the people who would imagine themselves doing that are the people watching anime and buying goods.

We're getting 'magical girl' shows that are meta and sometimes gore shows that are about inverting (never subverting) expectations for an audience very different from the original magical girl audience.

~~~
There's some really good stuff coming out of this, but it can be death too.
Well, the anime industry was hit pretty hard with the global market collapse there a few years back. Which caused a focus on producing more of these kind of shows ( ecchi, moe, etc ) for a quick buck because the fanbase for that sort of show spends a lot of money on merchandise. Its not a coincidence that the worst offenders are 12-13 heavily censored episode series with an OVA episode that's basically softcore porn but only comes with the DVD/Bluray. Which is of course completely uncensored. Wink wink, nudge nudge, open your wallet if you want to see the boobies.
Never mind the other problem lately where the broadcast animation quality is shit but they finish it/fix it just in time for you to spend money on the DVD/Bluray release. So you need to buy it if you want to see the series as it was "intended" ( <cough> ) with quality animation, no censor and probably an OVA episode that extends the ending.
Its gotten better since as the economy began to settle down but you still see these kinds of pandering lowest common denominator shows designed mainly to sell dvd/bluray and hug pillows. However, for those of us outside of Japan that use services like CR we have an inbuilt quality control so to speak. CR focuses on getting as many big title / high quality shows as it can per season. So we're somewhat insulated from the real bargain basement crap. This even extends to unlicensed sub groups. Who aren't going to waste their own time on translating and subbing awful shows.
As for the current state of anime? Nah, those kinds of shows aren't killing the industry any more than reality TV has killed the television industry in the west. They're produced on the cheap to turn a quick buck. They'll always be there to one degree or another and ecchi/harem shows are labelled as such if you want to avoid them.
Fan service on the other hand can get pretty annoying as of late when its inserted into shows that don't need it or where it just makes no sense whatsoever for it to be present. More so if its so blatantly inserted it disrupts the tone of a scene.
I'm watching all the ones you listed except Dog Days 3 and FT. Though I would not consider Cross Ange, Fafnir, or Saekano ecchi. The "first episode" of Saekano was actually a special and not the first episode. the point of the special was to titillate like most OVAs. The actual show is pretty darn tame stuff by comparison. Think World Only God Knows level of fanservice. They may have some fanservice, but so far, and I've watched up to the current episode in each, fanservice has not been the primary driver to put them in the ecchi category. It is more just some window dressing here and there, like a bath scene or shower scene really.
Like you said in a previous post, the actual issue is not the ecchi anyhow, it is the generic elements and lack of defining characteristics to make the anime standout that is the biggest problem I see at least. Of the harem shows this winter, I'd only consider Saekano and Absolute Duo to have a bit of its own identity. Devil is about average and maybe slightly more if I'm being generous. The rest are pretty bland and uninspiring to say the least, but have their so dumb its fun moments to keep me watching so far. Fafnir being weakest imho.
YES! It is, I agree. Now don't get me wrong I watched a few harems and a few ecchi , while some were ok or funny too much is too much. out of all the new titles just released I only watch 2. That's not a lot. If it continues this way people will get fed up with it, im talking about people who enjoy the ART of anime
Cross Ange isn't ecchi so much as an unrelenting and largely unnecessary visual assault of blatant dick pandering. >.>
Its the 80's Cinemax women's prison movie of anime. Which is kind of a shame because the story actually has its moments here and there so it didn't need to be that way.
That goes hand in hand with the problem though. The worse of these shows are basically produced to pander to the lowest common denominator for the sake of mechanise sales. The writing and character designs are completely secondary to the T&A. So they're mainly going to be an archetype checklist to make sure they hit all the fetish bases.
Nah, CA is not ecchi. It's not tagged as such on CR or MAL and I agree with that assesment. It has fanservice for sure but it is more used for shock factor than to be sexy. There is also an actual story there despite the over the top fanservice moments, haha.
As long as ecchi is done right I don't mind the genre. I mean, as long as girls like Ume Shiraume exist then I'm fine.
