Miyazaki on Moe.

It's difficult. They immediately become the subjects of lolicon fetishism. In a sense, if we want to depict someone who is affirmative to us, we have no choice but to make them as lovely as possible. But now, there are too many people who shamelessly depict [such heroines] as if they just want [such girls] as pets, and things are escalating more and more.

—Hayao Miyazaki

I can't exactly source this, but suppose he actually did say this. What is your opinion?

Miyazaki is from a different generation of artists and even though what he created is still very much relevant today, it's not very much like the standard anime creation, not to mention that his work is of a much higher quality than the average manga/anime due to sheer experience and of course, budget.

Moe characters are popular because people like them, if they were just a fad they would probably have died out by now, or very soon anyway.

Personally I'm about as tired of generic moe characters that serves as "pets" no less than I am of any generic anime regardless of its characters involved.

I like fleshed out characters that becomes moe due to all their traits. The blobs, that are made soulless and only look cute, have absolutely no appeal to me.

True, it is all dependent on the beholder, but Miyazaki also makes a point how the industry is filled with unsociable otakus. I mean, moe is good in my opinion, but most people don't act moe irl.

I do not believe moé has anything to do with lolicon, I say while wearing such an avatar as this.

The appeal is largely the same.

Miyazaki is great and all, but his opinion isnt Gospel either. Just because HE doesnt like it doesnt mean no one else can.
