i have no problem if a woman has issues in having babies so she uses a fertility treatment via sperm donor or what have you but i do have a problem when scientists are starting to insert 3 strands of dna in a fertilized egg.i mean what else could go wrong?

Absolutely nothing could ever go wrong.

These scientists know what they are doing.

Probably.

Why not do it the old fashion way?

WHAT?!

No. And BBC clearly overexaggerate the title. It isn't a 3-person baby. Just look at the diagram if you can't understand the scientific process...

An analogy would be, this is no different from having kidney transplant or liver transplant or cornea transplants from a total stranger.

As usual, unscientific people making a big deal of everything without even trying to understand the scientific process. Doing this will not create some superman that will take over the world -___-;;; relax, geez.

One thing for sure, the three-way fights on the Maury show will be absolutely EPIC!

ITT: Gross misrepresentation and misunderstanding of what's actually going on.

This should be fun.

except its mitochondrial DNA they're adding so it would be more like

"You are NOT the mother!"

Well. I know this will fail. I have a feeling they'll all come out deformed, or with disorders. That's going a little too far, science.

To those who don't know what mitochondria are:

mitochondria are small corpuscles present in each of our cells. They carry DNA, though it's not technically considered strictly part of our genome. Its function is still unclear, for what I know. Our DNA proper is in the cell's nucleus.

So why do mitochondria have DNA? Well, the story goes, back in the day of unicellular organism, they probably used to be bacteria living their own carefree lives. However, for whatever reason, at a certain point they were absorbed by the first cells which then became our ancestors. They merged and became part of its normal functioning, providing them with valuable advantages; making them better, improving their metabolism.

Now watch the next episode of Parasyte knowing that you hold in your body the minuscule relics of billion years old bacteria, absorbed and enslaved by our unicellular ancestors. And sweet dreams .

(and I agree that I don't think this is nearly as freaky as a "three person baby", because our traits are determined only by nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA doesn't count in this sense imho. I'm pretty sure these guys know what they are doing, this must have been tested on animals time and time again)

A. Not really new, similar techniques have been around since 2000, maybe a bit earlier. Artificial insemination techniques have been around longer, my sister's BF is a test tube baby. B. "Three parent babies" are generally as such due to fixing screwy mitochondria (an egg with healthy mitochondria is implanted by the nucleus of a fertilized egg with unhealthy mitochondria). Mitochondria have different DNA from somatic DNA (they are passed directly from the female), so once you've taken the deleterious mitochondria and the original nucleus of the egg cell out, there really shouldn't be that much to screw up. The repair is more humane than letting the progeny suffer what is sure to be an untimely and likely miserably death.

If they get it to work properly then yeah cool. Polyamorous people in a three-way relationship can have kids without one feeling like the kid really isn't theirs.

Oh, they are scientists now? Let's not forget who provoked the Dark Ages.
