Now, what I'm wanting is the recent "must watch" shows. I'd say within the past 5 years. It doesn't necessarily have to be a "masterpiece", because we'd never agree on what that is. BUT, I don't want POPULAR to be confused with what I'm asking for. I'm wanting the shows that have superb plot, characters, art, animation, soundtrack, etc.; the kind of shows that define what a good anime should be. For example, I would say that one recent "masterpiece" would be Stein's Gate.

Extremely helpful, but not quite what I was asking for. I asked for what you thought were the must watch anime were. Don't get me wrong, I now know that it is a commonly known fact that Stein's Gate is only an "ok" anime, and is absurd to think otherwise. But maybe you could tell me of what you think is better?

These are the ones that stand out for me:

Mushi-shi (Because Zoku Shou keeps it within 5 years)
Barakamon
Ping Pong
Monogatari/series
Chihayafuru
Kyosougiga
Usagi Drop
Anohana
Terror in Resonance
Rage of Bahamut
Kids on the Slope (despite wrapping up too fast)
Fate (Ufotable) for animation quality
Knights of Sidonia

Two that I'm sure that will be controversial to be included, but they make my list:
Mekakacity Actors
Flowers of Evil

Potentially (not finished yet):
Death Parade
Your Lie in April
Parasyte

If you want to include movies:
The Garden of Words
Giovanni's Island

People tend to leave out comedies for something like this but these deserve to be included:
The Devil is a Part Timer
Monthly Girl's Nozaki-kun
Tonari no Seki-kun
Seitokai Yakuindomo
Nichijou

And I couldn't say whether it is good because it is popular, or it is popular because it is good, but I wouldn't want to leave out AOT from the list.

What have you seen so far that you thought was really good? I'd rather try and suggest something you may not have seen.

I thought that if I did say all those I thought were good, people would tend to either give anime like the ones I watched, or bash on the ones I do think are great(As seen above). I would rather hear peoples opinions on what I should watch regardless of genre or bias.

With the understanding that this is very subjective, here is a list of my favorite shows, in no particular order. I don't know if they are all exactly from the last five years, but none of them feel outdated in any way.

The Absolute Best: (maybe The Magnificent Seven?)
- Eureka Seven
- Clannad / After Story
- Toradora
- Bakemonogatari
- Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop)
- Steins; Gate
- Little Busters / Refrain

The Next: (most are flawed in some way but still great)
- ef: Tale of Memories
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya
- Myself, Yourself
- Maoyu
- The Devil is a Part Timer
- A Certain Magical Index
- Anohana
- The World God Only Knows
- Spice and Wolf
- Golden Time
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Otome Youkai Zakuro
- Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl
- Mayo Chiki
- I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying
- Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions
- Barakamon

I mainly go for story in my anime and some of my favorite shows are:

- Shijō Saikyō no Deshi: Kenichi
- Hajime no Ippo
- Eyeshield 21
- Code Geass
- Death Note
- Hunter x Hunter
- Parasyte the maxum
- Tokyo Ghoul

- Flowers of Evil*
- Kill la Kill
- Cuticle Detective Inaba*
- Ixion Saga DT*
- Free! Iwatobi Swim Club + Eternal Summer*
- WATAMOTE*
- Chihayafuru
- Hunter x Hunter

*These are very unpopular anime, meaning a lot of people can't get into it... e.g. Flowers of Evil or Free! [it's not popular amongst straight male anime fans]

But for me, they're masterpieces... just rubbed me the right way. I can't get into SAO, NGNL or those singing/little girls anime... just not my thing.
