So I started a free trial today. I was planning to potentially subscribe for 1 year afterwards, unless I decided to cancel after trying the premium service.

Because Crunchyroll defaults to renewing at the overpriced monthly rate, I changed my payment method in settings to "yearly." This instantly charged my credit card for 60 dollars as a "prepay" with no warning whatsoever.

I wanted my credit to be charged only at the end of my free membership, if I even decide to continue. Crunchyroll's attempt to railroad free trials into the overpriced monthly rate is not leaving a good initial impression on me.

It sounds like there was a misunderstanding. CR wasn't trying to trick you into starting your subscription before you were sure or to get a monthly subscription that you don't want. I suggest contacting support directly using the Contact Us form, and explain to them what happened. I can't guarantee exactly what they can do but it would seem reasonable for you to request either a reversal of the charge and continuation of the trial if you are still undecided, or ask for a couple of weeks to be added on to your subscription in lieu of the lost trial period if you actually have already decided to keep the service, but wasn't expecting that it would kick in immediately.

I did use the "contact us" form and have received no reply.

I didn't lose any time on the trial. The issue is that I don't want this charge on my January credit card statement. I would like a refund now, and to be charged only when my "free trial" period ends, assuming I haven't cancelled beforehand.

I received a reply to my message just a few minutes after this post, and was notified of a refund. It sounds like the early charge might have been unintentional. Thank you for sorting it out.
