It's like the title says, how do you judge anime you've watched? Whether it be good or bad every opinion has to stem from somewhere.

What I mean by this is, do you judge a show on what it does right or wrong? Or is it something totally different?

Personally I find myself actively judging an anime on what it did right and avoid focusing on what may have not turned out so well. This is probably because I think that things are much more enjoyable when you don't sweat the small things.

So what about you guys? What goes through your heads as you watch anime?

Hmmmm..... I would have to say that I am kind of similar. I take note of the good points, but also the bad. The most important thing to me is that an anime can keep my attention. With so many good shows out there, if an anime doesn't have my undivided attention (for other anime that I am currently watching), then I stop watching that anime. I like it when I feel connected to the characters and feel their emotion, if that doesn't happen, then it gets the boot and I am on to the next one. lol

While i'm watching a show I don't really judge it in a critical sense - like finding flaws and good points etc. I just sort of make a mental note of what things entertained me and what things I didn't like.

After a show ends, I judge it based off of two things
1) Memorability - How much the show stands out to me among similar titles in its genre and how much impact it has.
2) How well the morals, themes, story, humor, or general "take-aways" from the show stick with me.

Again - I don't usually think of shows i've finished in terms of "good" and "bad" as much as "will I remember this?" or "has this affected me in some way?". If a show doesn't do either, it's not bad - but I tend to think more highly of shows that do. Everything else just kind of sits in a limbo of "that was pretty good".

It's sounds terrible, but I can't watch an anime that hasn't got good artwork. If the style isn't to my taste, I don't watch it (FMA,Bleach etc).

Apart from that, I judge it by how the show progresses and if it stays interesting. I like mainly slice of life/school based anime so it is always interesting to see how they keep the audience interested. The others I watch like NGNL it's based on what develops and the intelligence of the show. If the plot takes a turn that doesn't make any sense or the cleverness of the show falters I consider it inconsistent and not a good anime.

But those are just my opinions x3

Hmm.... I never consciously thought about it. Now that I think about it, I would consider it good if it either touches me, makes me think, intrigues me, amuses me, or makes me crack up at the crazy and hilarious characters and their antics.

if the anime doesnt get me sleepy in the first few episodes...then i consider the anime is worth watching. And also the character.. it is usually the character that gets me stick to keep watching the anime.

Firstly the characters. Are the characters interesting? Do i find them relateable? Do i care what happens to these characters? Any good show starts with a good cast they are the backbone of if you will care about anything that happens in the story.

Next is the story itself the meat and bones. Is the story interesting? Are the ideas good? Not every anime has to be some philosophical masterpiece but even if the idea is simple it should tell a good story. When it doesn't and they just rely on padding like moe and fan service in place of bothering to tell a story then it doesn't interest me. Even a fan servicey harem anime can tell a good story. and have good characters See World God Only Knows for what i mean.

So I'm invested in the story and the characters are likeable and interesting. Next is the polish. The animation is a big bonus point if it looks good. Great animation can really add to an already great story and fantastic characters like Ghost In The Shell: SAC. It has some gorgeous animation and art in it and also this show leads me to the second bonus point. The soundtrack. A great soundtrack can make epic moments even more epic. Shows like Eureka Seven put an exclamation point on touching moments and epic fight scenes with a great musical score. The opening and ending themes are great too.

So those are the main things i judge on. The things that make me like shows less are when they do really dumb things like padding or be overly pretentious to a point where it feels like the one who wrote it is some self appointed genius who thinks nobody can understand them so they try to be deep like Serial Experiments Lain and just fail. I also can't stand shows which are obsessed with flashbacks like Naruto which i can understand because it's such a long running show but did Attack on Titan need all those flashbacks? It's like they are in the middle of an epic fight to the death and then we have some flashback because Mikasa is reminded of the time that they saved a puppy or something. They also dragged things out way too long in that show since I'm on the subject. Things like moving a rock or running through the woods just should not last too long.

Some common character types put me off shows too like the innocent rookie girl who just gets in the way and has outbursts because everyone should be nice and drink tea and have pink cookies together or something. Psycho-Pass i just started watching recently and this character surfaced. Wasn't enough to make me not like the show it's great but jeez it's annoying when they need to make some weak goody girl who is just there so they can sell figures to sexist Otaku who want to protect her.

The one i absolutely hate though which seems to exist in a lot of Shonen shows is the new military guy who never follows orders. Argevollen is a recent example of this the MC. Whenever they have a battle it's like "Okay here are your orders. Do this and do not screw up" "Yes sir no problem count on me!" and then the battle starts and he charges off to nearly get everyone else killed like "I DO WHAT I WAAAAAANT" Actually outside of anime the MC in the TV show Homeland is like this and it just annoys me. I mean how selfish and self important are these people to put every one of their friends and colleagues lives on the line for their whims? They just happen to have a lot of luck where things will sort of accidentally turn out okay lol.

well before when i would search fro an anime i would look at the display pic for it..then read the synopsis...if i think it sounds boring or not enough detail i would not watch it......but recently ive been going back to those anime's and start watching them..i give the the 3-7 ep rule...
kinda glad i went back to watch some anime i skipped over... for example i almost didnt watch HunterxHunter..

now i tend to watch anime regardless of the cover and description and stick to the ep rule

Its really all about story and plot for me. The more immersed I am in the story, the better.
