Post Reply How do you judge anime?
Posted 2/4/15
I am in agreement with others in that if the anime doesn't keep me entertained enough to make it to the end of the episode then I'll either stop watching it or continue on the next episode hoping it might get better.

Sometimes I might re-watch the episode depending upon my mood or revisit it another time just to see if maybe I wasn't getting the gist of the show or maybe I missed something about it. I sometimes make a habit of rereading or re-watching things as sometimes I get the wrong impression of whatever material I'm dealing with.

I judge anime based on what I feel it's purpose is. Of course I'd judge the plot of say, an adventure or psychological anime more harshly than I would a short, comedy, parody, etc.

If I find a comedy to be incredibly funny, of course I'd consider it a successful anime. If I become really immersed in an adventure anime, and find the plot really interesting and well executed, of course I'd consider it a success. Basically, what I'm saying is it depends on the type of anime.

Hmmm....

1)Do I like or hate most of the characters?
2)If 2 seasons long, does the 2ed season going in a totally different direction than the first ruin the series as a whole?
3)If 1 season long, does the last episode or arc ruin the entire series?
4)Does the series end on an unresolved cliffhanger?
5)Does it have a very drastic change in tone (genre swap) from beginning to end that kills what you initially loved about it?
6)If long, how much of it is filler?
7)Does my favorite character die half way through the series?
8)Can I tolerate this art style?
9)How many of the characters have annoying ear-piercing voices?
10)Do the female characters do more than cry, fawn over boys, pose in tight skimpy outfits, & serve as something that needs to be rescued?

im not sure if i have anything to say into this since i just recently started watching anime, but what i do know already from myself on is that whenever the story line is deep enough to go in trough.

for example;

my very first anime i watched was Strike the blood; according the reviews it was Ok-ish, but for my personal viewings i coulndt agree more, the story behind it was great, but the charatars were either annoying, or it took just way to long to get on point. not to mention the same lines they consantly used each single fight that appeard. but in overall i had a great time watching all the episodes so that means i enjoyed it right?

well after STB i continued on with Sword Art Online and thats where i just couldnt stop watching anymore. i went trough season 1 and 2 with-in a day not sleeping, simply because i had to see more. the genres used for this anime approved all my intrests. stroy line was going really deep & the charatars were pretty much straight forward. i even got on a point now that im watching back some of my favorite episodes. but this also means that i just enjoyed it again right?

now to the point; in my opinion on how to judge an anime is to understand how you are experience it yourself. sure you can read the reviews but until you have not seen it for yourself you cannot judge it by yourself.

TL;DR

- Watch what you prefer in genres, what do you like.
- dont judge an anime on reviews, watch it, love it or hate it.

Soundtrack. I know, such a minor thing, but it impacts my enjoyment quite a bit.

I am pretty critical.... hard on myself and the shows i watch.

I prefer stuff with a mildly logical premise

I don't like allot of "fan service"... super tired of bath house episodes.

I like shows with unique elements, mixed genre, distinct design and the least amount of cliche's possible.

If a show starts to drag, has repeating jokes and predictable or irritating characters I drop it.

hair gotta be right...

For me, the characters HAVE to be cute, or I will not watch the anime. I read the plot, and see if it's any good. Most of the animes I've watched have vibrant colors, pink, and sparkles. uvu

Story and characters are the most important aspect, followed by quality of animation, so me.

1) Story/Plot --> Is it an interesting story, does it move along well (pacing).
2) Characters --> Are they more than a cheap cookie cutter cliche
3) Length --> Usually bad pacing is involved in this as it will drag an anime over many many years without barely getting anywhere (I am looking at you Naruto, One Piece, Bleach)
4) Censoring --> If you didn't want it on screen then DON'T DRAW IT AND COVER IT! Either show something or not, but the annoying black stripes/steam/cutesy picture covering stuff is distracting to the eyes and slows down my reading of subtitles (I hate dubs)

Bonus Point Round (As in not necessary for me but if an anime has these it goes up in my estimation)

Mecha --> Love Mecha
Music --> Music if it is in anime can make or break it. I don't need music but love it. As such if an anime has bad music, that is far worse than no music.

There are already a lot of points being said that I judge an anime

1. Writting - if it is written well, the story and the characters follows
A good unique plot is a big plus too but there a lot of of plots out there that are rehashed over and over , so the writting is cirtical .
Stories that make sence . Chracters that you can connect. Its all about the writting whatever genre it maybe.

2. Animation quality

3. Minus fanservice , i can tolerate a little but it just a major disruption especially when its forced into the story or scene and its annoying when its repeated over and over, it really gets old.

4. Quality voice acting whether it be the orginal or the adr version , the realistic it sounds the better ,thats why I prefer drama becuase it brings the quality acting of a seiyuu

5. Music that works for a scene and mood
