I have long been skeptical of Game Informer's journalistic integrity, but I just spotted a glaring discrepancy that I feel should be brought to light.
Dragon Age Inquisition won 2014 GOTY as both the reader's AND editor's pick.
However, in their breakdown of each editor's top ten lists, Dragon Age gets the top spot in only four, while Shadow of Mordor gets the top spot in five.
Upon further analysis, Dragon Age appears in eight editor's lists. Shadow of Mordor appears in twelve.
I did the math. Assuming a number one spot is worth ten points, a number two spot nine, etc. Dragon Age received 66 according to my calculations, while Shadow of Mordor received 95. Admittedly, I may have missed something, but this is not even a minor discrepancy.
I just don't understand how a game becomes the editor's GOTY without being the game that the editors chose as GOTY. And for the record, I loved Dragon Age. I just would prefer not to believe that the top honor is purchased as if it were an ad, and believe that this raises sufficient cause for suspicion.
I have just sent feedback, so we will see if they address this.
Anyone have thoughts on this? And please, anyone with a copy of the magazine, feel free to double check my math and correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

Unless it's just that the "editors lists" are 'favorite games' and not 'best games.'

I haven't read it, but I know that if I were to vote at least a few years my "favorite games" from my top 10 list wouldn't get "game of the year" consideration from me, for different reasons.

Sorry I can't clarify anything about the actual content but there is a possible flip side of the coin depending on how they do things.

Essentially, you are suggesting that on their personal lists subjectivity is allowed. But there is a separate vote for the main result, during which they are asked to view the games objectively? I suppose it's possible.

Yeah, pretty much something like that.

Take 2013 for example.

Rogue Legacy would have been near the very top of my "Favorite games" list - but I would never personally vote it as "Game of the Year." It's just a small, narrow-scoped indie title.

I had slightly more fun with Rogue Legacy than I did with Bioshock Infinite, but BI may have been hands down my Game of the Year (and ultimately, I got more playtime/enjoyment out of Rogue Legacy than I did GTAV but I would have voted GTA V GOTY before Rogue Legacy as well.)

I could also be wrong as that's just how I view it and they are paid for that. Who knows, haha.

I used to get Game Informer in the mail due to having the Gamestop card. Then, they started offering it digitally. ... Now, it gets marked as read and deservedly flushed.
