I have been into manga a lot more then anime, so I never really followed crunchyroll much. Kept my eye on it though but always dreamed of something similar for manga. Now crunchyroll has started into the realm of manga and without even a second thought I finally got premium.

I came to the site close to when it first started and was totally for it being the none-shady way to view japanese anime. Now that it has manga it has my vote, the selection might still be pretty low but its a start. I have always used other sites that I can never say give anything back to the author. So I bought them when I could, but 15 dollars for a volume is a large price to pay, there is no way you can store all you want to read either (I have over 300 volumes atm. room is cramped).

Anyway the reason for this post was that now that I decided to use crunchyroll I wanted to see what the overall opinion was on the viewer and give my own. I tried to look for a topic like this but if there is one its been buried.

Now I mean the browser version, I have not really looked into the mobile app yet, but I rarely read on mobile, so its likely I won't use it often.

WARNING I get pretty strong here, its my opinion but I just want to see what other people think

First of all, its crap, just getting the main point out first. A tiny flash app is the viewer, and a lacking one at that. Controlling it could feel nice after some practice but using a flash app in this case is slow and ruins the experience. It may go full screen but without full screen you have to zoom to see anything.

The choice to do this was likely to protect around saving the images, in vain, full screen and print screen. Takes a bit more time but still doable. There is no way to totally prevent it so other then prevent the image from being normally copied that is about all you can do.

Flash is basically dead, it still works for video but htm5 is quickly taking over, the reason is it does not integrate with the browser, and integration always improves performance and ease of use. For this there is canvas, images can easily be applied to canvas, they can even be encrypted. Although there are ways for uber hackers to take advantage and get the images, they can do the same with flash.

I am not going to go further on canvas as I could write a documentary on what it can do and how it could improve the viewer, but I am a developer who likes to use it, so it gets my vote, others may disagree and flash does have its uses, but again this is my opinion :)

Next there is the layout and search ability. There is little search (only by name), no genre selection, no authors, no publishers, no suggestions nothing. It has nothing that even an alpha version would not be without. I can live with low selection for now as long as the actual application is functional.

Now to end my little rant, I only intend for this to be constructive criticism, I want the viewer to succeed but to me, its unusable in its current state. So what does everyone else think?

Administrivia:
I've moved this to the Manga forum (from General Discussion), since it sounds like you are looking more for discussion at this point than direct feedback to Crunchy.

If you do want to post something that is more certain to be read by CR staff you should post your suggestions and feedback in either of these support forums:

/forumcategory-391026/suggestions-feedback

/forumcategory-573577/manga-support

On-topic:
The manga viewer on the website is pretty awful, but I don't care for reading any books on any of the web-based readers I've encountered. There are apps for that, and that's what I use on my iPad or Kindle Fire (though CR doesn't have a manga app for Kindle).

I do think the iOS app is good on my iPad mini (I'd never even attempt to try it on my phone since it would be too tiny and I don't like guided reading). There are something things that could be better but it's very usable and not annoying.

I looking forward to them continuing to add titles and to fill in the remaining gaps in titles they have. I'm getting to the point where I might run out of things to read--either having read them completely or dropped after a few chapters because it wasn't something I like.

Damn those accordions! i thought help was general lol, thanks for moving it and this does seem like a better place for it since I am sure direct feedback would likely only get moderator response.

I agree that apps of the mobile devices could be much better then the desktop, afterall it makes sense. But typically mobile devices are slower so its not that I don't use them, i just find it takes me seconds to read a page and more then that to go to the next one. Manga is "consumed" much faster then a book, so speedy delivery really helps to prevent waiting on the next page. More of a pet peeve but I have a tablet and a phone and only use them for manga when there is no other choice.

But flash app aside I would say even with a low amount of titles some filters are needed, people have preferences in manga, also ratings help to prevent reading a couple chapters and finding out it does not interest you in a lot of cases.

Though complaints aside I know dealing with licensing causes many restrictions, even ones that you would not think would be an issue.
