During my tenure of drama and hell on tumblr, I learned of a gender that is literally considered to be "without gender", also called agender, or "nonbinary". Basically, a person feels they are neither female nor male and they think they do not conform to a gender role, so to speak.

I think myself it seems more than a bit outlandish, especially considering that i have never met a person of this sort and I personally think it doesn't sound real to me.

We are in a society that relies on genders and gender roles, I don't understand how one could think they couldn't conform to a gender of any kind. It's not like being transgender where you think you were born the wrong gender; is is literally claiming that you "don't have a gender" in a society where you literally have a designated gender and everything is gendered.

It sounds like made up hoodoo at first. I imagine if it does exist, it's extrmely rare, if you count people who have actual, real, long lasting gender cofusion, and not just a bunch of posers trying to make themselves unique and specialized. It sounds like a condition more than an identity to me. I don't know, your thoughts?

Having no gender doesn't seem possible to me. Our society's gender roles are derived from biological differences between males and females. The consequences are sometimes negative but gender roles weren't initially meant to be a bad thing. That said, we are overwhelmingly primed to behave like our gender.

It seems more likely that the person rejects both genders rather than being without one. But I could be wrong.

Maybe it's a more extreme case of "asexualism"?

I agree with the OP about it being a condition brought about by a long period of gender/sexual confusion.

It definitely seems extremely stupid or arrogant though.

I don't care. If somebody wants to say they have no gender and that makes them happy who am I to argue? Not like it has any impact on my life or bothers me.

Somebody could say they are an elephant if it makes them happy, idc.

Hmm... Sounds kind of confusing...

I honestly think there is no such thing as "genderless" human beings, because all living things have genders. It's only non-living things that are considered "genderless".

I guess it's possible, it just sounds a little confusing to me.

Also, is that the same thing as "genderfluid" or am I getting that mixed up? (all of this trans/cis/bi/genderqueer/whatever stuff just confuses me... )

I feel that I display traits of both. I don't really care for preset roles either but at the same time I surely look and act the part of a male so that's what I identify as. I really question why does it matter though as each individual will have their own nuances. There really isn't a need to define as I can see.

Very rarely will someone actually care to even hear what you identify as. I say believe what you want, I don't care to judge.

Everybody is so uptight about damn gender. If you came out of the womb, you're a person from that point on.

Actually yes. I consider myself fairly agender.

I have a lot of traits that are ascribed to the female gender, and, for the most part, get along with women more than men. I just do not fit into the traditional gender roles (which are primarily social constructs).

My friends have, in the past, often commented on my weird mix between the two genders. One has commented by saying "It's like you say these things that are fairly female, but somehow when you say them they're not girly, but kinda makes it ok to say them as a man" another has commented (in regards to my musical tastes, "it's like "i'm a boy" with one song and the next is like "I'm a girl"..." I'm also not dead set against wearing a skirt instead of pants (faaaaaaar less restrictive, though I'd prefer something black and prefferably linen or another thick woven fabric)), but don't due to my desire to conform to society outwardly and not grab too much attention. I also have problems with percieving gender roles in others. I'll ask women to do traditionally male work without thinking "oh, they're weaker physically" or anything, or I'll openly talk to men about their emotions... Sometimes people mistakenly think I'm gay (mostly men), but I'm heterosexual despite ascribing myself as fairly genderless.

Part of it might be that I grew up in a household that was predominantly female, however, the females I grew up with weren't girly girls. Mother loved woodworking and traditionally male hobbies. Sister is the sports fanatic and the one who will burp in public or pick a bar fight. (also for a time was one of my harshest critics of having girly interests).

As a child, it was kinda weird also. I could play a feminine role just as well as a male, and in my mind could swap genders without consequence...

Or, perhaps on second thought I'm not genderless, but just really adept at being both.... There's just not a really good word for what I am..
:s

Either way, I don't really follow traditional genders, never was "sexually confused" or anything. I've always been this way, and always have known my sexuality (perhaps even a little too early...>.>)

but yeah.. gender in and of itself I believe is totally a social construct, unlike sexuality.

I wouldn't doubt that in the past it was rare, but I'm almost certain it's more common now than it's ever been mainly because gender roles have been challenged quite a bit over the past 30 years (and remember, I'm 33) and in probably the last 4, they've even begun to swap in mainstream media. You see, ESPECIALLY after last year, men being cast aside (and most of the male oriented ads during the superbowl focused on men in caretaking roles. It was a man who was in the lost puppy budweiser ad. it was the role of "father" that was in a lot of the others..) where as women are taking what have been more masculine power roles and portrayed as the sports fanatics, (I remember at least one ad with the father and daughter baking while the mother was rushing off to watch sports on TV), the CEO's, etc...

So yeah.. totally possible and totally real.

Gender is only really a cultural thing (at least by modern definition) so I think that it as an idea can die out over time. Will that happen? Maybe. Our language is evolving to allow for gender neutral speech - although some additions are forced or stupid - so I don't see why our culture couldn't evolve in the same way.

I personally hope that this happens one day so that I can wear a skirt for practicality and without any girly connotations.

gender and sex are two very different things. And sexual preference ads a third different thing into the mix to make it all the more confusing

Gender is the social role ascribed to one's sex. One's sex is the physical male/female dichotomy that... well, quite frankly you can't avoid unless you're hermaphroditic. Sexual preference is fairly self explanatory.

But thanks for the gender fluid thing. I guess that far more accurately describes me. never knew about it before. O.o.

gender is a societal thing; sex is a biological thing. Meaning biologically, there are only two sex types, gender can be anything since its determined by society. sexual preference is a beast on its own.
