So, I've been wondering....

Since most of their ""Netflix Original Series"" get home video releases (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Hemlock Grove, etc) at some point, does that mean that it will be possible to see a Knights of Sidonia BluRay/DVD release later on down the line? Since it's being listed on there as a ""Netflix Original""?

I have no idea. I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum though, so that might yield a response there if anyone has knowledge about how this might work.

Possibly? Perhaps they're just waiting for the second season before working on any kind of home video release.

The anime series? I saw they released the first season available for streaming sometime last year. I no longer give them my money so haven't been on there since. DVD releases are not really Netflix's call and never have been. It's going to depend on which company picked them up for distribution--- it certainly wasn't Netflix (historically, Netflix hasn't been a manufacturing/authoring company of DVDs; just considered to be media rental distribution) I'm thinking off the top of my head it was Funimation that picked up the series for distribution here in the US.

NOW.... I DID hear Netflix are doing i.e., producing a sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon....whether that's been released yet, I'm not sure...but after hearing all the buzz about it, it didn't sound all that great.

No other North American anime distributor has stated they have the home video rights to Knights of Sidonia, so presumably, Netflix grabbed all available licenses.

I just checked Amazon for House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, two of Netflix's original series, and it looks like they've been licensing out distribution rights to different companies (Sony Pictures and Shout Factory, respectively), so they may still be trying to find a partner to work with for anime series.

What they would need would be to outsource DVD mastering/authoring that is if they wanted be get into selling them. I'm more interested in who is helping them with localization. It's a wait and see deal I think. At last check, during the summer of last year (which was just prior to my canceling my membershiip), their streaming selections for anime were dismal to say the least. However, if they have support to do it and naturally the demand is there, it looks like their changing their business model a tad...producing their own series was the first step in being a major player. House of Cards won some series critical buzz and awards so I don't think there's doubt that they have the chops.

Well, for the sake of fandom, I really hope they step it up and increase their anime offerings. It very well could make me go back to them if anything for just a streaming membership.
