3-D / Hyper-realistic art in anime. How do you feel about it?
Posted 2/5/15
As technology gets more and more refined, animators are able to move past the 2-D art style that anime has had for decades upon decades.

It's still at a growing point, but the majority incorporate both, with your standard animation, for 2015 of course, and super realistic 3-d art.

How do you feel about this?

I'll try and search for some pics of what I mean so you understand

CGI is fine.

Last Exile/Berserk Golden Age Arc movies both have some great CGI (and also some really, really bad CGI at certain points).

Varies. I don't really like it when it's used too explicitly since it doesn't look great by itself in a lot of series, but when it's blended well I think it can look nice. There are certain games that look really good doing an emulation of anime style in 3D(See Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Series...gorgeous). I'd like to see more that.

I don't really like CGI all that much in anime. I just don't like how it looks as much as 2D.

There are a lot of good hybrids out there that use both 2d and CGI like ufotable's titles and those are great.

I agree with this.

I wish more anime companies would take some notes from video game developers on how to make good anime-CGI, Ninja Storm is a great example of that.

Though I wonder if it has to do with a difference in budget? I'm not sure.

Yeah I'd say a lot of it is probably budgetary unfortunately. Although there could be some skill difference there as well due to their fields possibly? I don't think most anime in general get much in budget or make huge amounts of money. It's often to promote the source or side products(manga, light novel, merch, games etc.).

For the most part, I find that 3D anime characters are used as a gimmick, and don't really add much to the story or viewing experience.

However, when integrated with 2D characters for backgrounds or mechanized equipment, the results can be phenomenal if done properly.

I believe you are referring to this type of animation.

I personally don't mind. Variety never hurts. But traditional art will always be favorite.

I think the CGI in Sakasama no Patema looked great imo.
CGI in Ushinawareta was ok.
i still prefer hand-drawn animation though.
