Let’s first look at the word “yaoi”.

Yaoi: “A Japanese genre of fictional media focusing on homoerotic romantic or sexual relationships between male characters.”

This genre is usually created by female authors for the female audiences. However, anyone can like yaoi, no matter what gender or sexual orientation you are. But I’ve noticed in the anime community, some straight people disregard this genre as “not their thing” because they’re either uncomfortable by it, or they can’t relate to it.

But the question I wanna ask you guys is why? And here is my guess:

As a gay person, I’ve grown up watching straight couples in movies, TV shows, anime, and every freakin’ toilet paper commercials. Straight people are everywhere! So, because I’ve seen it all my life, I’ve grown use to it. When I see a straight couple holding hands, it doesn’t bother me, nor does it make me uncomfortable. In fact, it sometimes makes me go “aww, they’re so cute together”. Why? Because I can relate to the love they share, whether they’re a straight couple or a gay people. People can relate to love, and love doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, straight people don’t see it that way about gay people. And who can really blame them? Gay people are not nearly as represented in the media as straight people are. So when they see a gay couple holding hands, it’s rare and unusual for them. They look at it as if it’s some sort of a circus act. They don’t see it as a normal and everyday thing, they just think it’s a “genre” that you either like or dislike. And I can’t help but find this as a problem. Why? Well, do you consider a movie with an all-black cast to be a "matter of taste"? It just rubs me the wrong way.

Some anime fans would stay far away from yaoi. It doesn’t matter if a certain anime show has great animation, well-developed characters, interesting plot or amazing writing. If the story consists of a gay couple, they’ll automatically dismiss it and say “I’m not into yaoi”. They’re not used to seeing it, therefore, they don’t want to get used to it. They’d rather miss out on a good anime than to see two male characters being affectionate with each other (and these are hand-drawn animated characters, not real people!). I saw a lot of comments like "Yikes, I'm traumatized now", and those reactions were especially prominent when "Love Stage!!" came out.

I guess the point that I’m trying to make here is that I think more people need to be more open-minded about yaoi, and actually give it a chance. Two male characters who love each other shouldn’t “gross” you out. It shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable; it shouldn’t make you feel like you’re “scarred for life”. Because at the end of the day, these characters represent human beings showing true human emotions, and it doesn’t matter what gender they are. It might even help you learn and grow as an anime fan, and maybe find a whole new perspective on this genre.

I would like to know your thoughts on this.

P.S. Of course, I'd say the same thing about yuri, but it seems - to me anyway - that yaoi gets more criticism.

I loved Love Stage!! because it was hilarious. It may be the only Yaoi I'll ever watch, but I'm glad I did.

If I were going to spend my time watching a homoerotic relationship develop, I would just rather have it be developing between two girls because... Reasons.

You use words that give off the vibe that you did not like seeing heterosexual couples, why should we have to watch something we don't like? Watching yaoi for me would be like you watching yuri, two genders that I could not care less for sexually.

Thats the thing though, a lot of people are closed minded especially when it comes to gay couples so it is extremely difficult to just say " I think you should go against what you believe and watch this thing you don't like."

Sure I would really like people in general to be more open minded about the whole thing in general but I don't see it happening at least not all at once.

And this ^^ even if they don't mind the idea of yaoi they still don't have to like it. Its a step up if they can accept someone that says they openly like yaoi though.

I also went out of my way to watch Love Stage!! when it came out and liked it.

But in general yaoi as a genre doesn't interest me for the same reasons romance as a genre doesn't, it's not a type of story I generally care about. Characters who are homosexual I'm fine with and I'd very much like to see more diversity on that score outside pigeonhole genres as long as the characters aren't comic relief and/or just defined by that one trait.

It's unfortunate people will drop shows like Shin Sekai Yori for that though.

And I am now imagining a genderbent Yuri Kuma Arashi...

You mean when I said this part?: When I see a straight couple holding hands, it doesn’t bother me, nor does it make me uncomfortable. In fact, it sometimes makes me go “aww, they’re so cute together”.

I gave yaoi anime a shot and a part of me just got taken out of the experience whenever some suggested gay thing happened. It's just not for me. I don't have a problem with it existing or people watching it, but at the end of the day my brain tells me I like the ladies and in return the homosexual stuff tends to turn me away. I can deal with it in small amounts like the twins in Ouran High School Host Club when it's scarcely used, but it's when it becomes a main focus point that I can't deal with it. It's hard to say that without sounding homophobic as fuck, and like I say I've no trouble with people watching that or being gay for someone, but it's just not my cup of tea, and at the end of the day we all have preferences.

I see what you're saying. However, I'm a gay guy, so when I watch movies about a straight couple (and almost every movie has a straight couple), I don't focus so much on their gender..but rather the love and affection that they develop with each other as human beings. Maybe that could be a bit more helpful if you do the same. The way I see it, I don't watch a romantic movie to get turned on, I watch it to get the feels, ya know?

My brain works differently, but I can absolutely see where you're coming from, and it's a trait I would admire having. As it stands I may be able to change how I feel if I forced myself through show after show, but since anime is my past-time and I feel a past-time should be enjoyed, I don't like forcing things. Again, I get where you're coming, it's just not my thing.

if you noticed, the human race is the only species in the world that are homosexual, you don't see animals being homosexual do you. The point is men are generally supposed to like women and vice versa. I respect other people's sexual orientation, and i sure do believe that love will overcome everything, even society's norms. So if you like men, and you are a guy, just go for it. If you are straight, go for it. And if you are a woman, and you are a woman, just go for it, but the real question is: why hat yuri
