You know, to be honest, I wish XP was available freely. I'd probably use it instead of linux for some of my machines.

I don't like how resource hungry 7 was, and 8 I'm sure loves to suck up its share as well.

Lubuntu is faaaaar superior in that regard, but the fact of the matter is, Windows is the format for most programs.

Yes, I was given an Emachine in 2006 with Windows XP Home installed. It's a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz processor, it came with one GB of RAM.

I used to use it for gaming quite a lot. It was my dedicated WoW computer for most of the time I played that game. Not a bad processor really for a single core, so all I needed to buy to make it run well was a graphics card and another stick of 1 GB RAM.

When I upgraded to a new PC back in 2010 (Windows 7) I gave the computer to my dad. And when I upgraded to a new PC again in 2014 I swapped it out for my dad with the 2010 PC.

So I decided to attach the old XP machine to my TV. Its graphics card had broken ages ago, so I bought a new low profile GEforce 210 with 1GB of memory for 35 dollars. I also attached a wireless keyboard and mouse, and with that I can do any sort of HD streaming that I want. There's an awful lot of unlicensed anime out there that I like, so it's sort of my designated fansub machine. I'm pretty pleased.

Obviously Windows XP is no longer supported. But I used the registry hack to make it receive updates for Windows POS machines/Windows server 2003. So far so good on that end. I also am using Mozilla Firefox (whose new versions are still supported by XP thankfully) with noscript and adblock plus. I'm not going to use it to do my taxes or anything, but I feel that it's secure enough for my purposes.

Crazy thing about WIndows XP, when it's running idle on the desktop it's truly IDLE. Like we're talking totally zero CPU usage. I try to minimize my procs on any given machine I use, and I can get that machine down to like 27 when idle. Whereas my Windows 7 and 8 PC's hover anywhere from 40-50, while almost always using 1-5 percent CPU. I don't know if that's just what happens when CPU cores are chained together in a multicore machine or what, but the difference are sort of huge.

Nope, I'm using Windows 7. I'm waiting for the day when the next Windows is out because Windows 8 is just awful.
