Creation of jobs and opportunities (even if artificially so,) compulsory paid days off, an excuse to cosplay and gorge on candy, sales, ability to see friends and family because they got days off too? I see plenty of reason to keep holidays. They're supposed to be either festive or days of relaxation. Sure, I despise a few of them over others but if there's someone that wants to celebrate it, let em. There's just too much negativity in the world to not have them.

Hollywood would have been devastated if there were no holidays . Picture it...

No Rankin-Bass X-mas specials (Year Without a Santa Claus, Rudolph, Frosty), no White Christmas, no Babes in Toyland, no Grinch, no Elf, no Santa Clause 1-3, no Miracle on 34th St, no Groundhog Day, no National Lampoons X-Mas Vacation, no Treehouse of Horror, no Friday the 13th or Halloween franchises...even tv/movies/cartoons/anime as we know it would be lacking. No X-Mas/New Year's/Festival episodes of any anime.

No "The Quiet Man" on St. Patrick's Day, no 1776 or Yankee Doodle Dandy on July 4, no "The Longest Day" on Memorial Day, no Three Stooges marathons on New Year's Eve, no Ten Commandments at Easter even though it's a Passover movie, no March of the Wooden Soldiers on Black Friday from back when it used to be just "the day after Thanksgiving" to start the public-domain Christmas specials, no Sound of Music on Thanksgiving because the TV networks want something four hours long so they don't have to work that night...

Any holiday that allows me to mutilate vegetables is a fine holiday.

i dont think its unnecessary, when youre in the working world doing the 9-5 having holidays like the ones youve listed gives some extra meaning and something to look forward to (in most cases)

I celebrate holidays to be cool

Of course they're meant to mark important dates and events, that's their purpose, and they give people a chance to celebrate and unwind with their families.

To be fair, most people don't know why we celebrate them or why it's a tradition anymore. And I don't believe in God so Easter and Christmas have lost their meaning in that respect.

But holidays have taken on a new meaning. They are something to look forward to, an excuse to celebrate and do thing we wouldn't normally do. There's so many bad things happening in the world I think we need these events to keep us going, even if we don't believe the stories behind them.

I appreciate holidays when I have that day off. Or in the case of Thanskgiving, the entire week off.

But holidays that exist to be nothing more than a pointless commemoration of something. St. Patrick's, Cinco de Mayo, and Halloween are among my least favorite since most of them seem like little more than an excuse to get drunk or otherwise party for most people and often don't celebrate anything in particular (Cinco de Mayo is particularly bad in this regard--Mexico's independence day was in September).

The ones that give me days off and the ones I like to decorate for (Halloween and Christmas) aren't pointless to me.

It its a reason to open a bear, get a day off or earn extra money at work, i am all for it... but yes, i dont celebrate the actual reasons for the holidays.

Christmas & Easter are both Christian holidays I'm pretty sure. Valentines Day & Halloween are commercial holidays.
The point is for people to just have something to do or an excuse to see & hang out with family imo without work getting in the way for some.
But there are holidays that I considered pointless tbh. Like Columbus Day.
