My first language is Spanish, then I learnt Norwegian (I was born in Norway), but I think those two are pretty much equal for me now. I started learning English in first grade in Elementary School, but didn't really take it that seriously till I was like 11-12, since that was when I started talking with people on forums etc (I've read through my early conversations on crunchyroll and I still cringe just thinking about it...)

Yes it is and if I believed in any greater power in the universe I would thank it profusely that I had the good fortune for this to be my native language.

Because I didn't realise until I started learning Japanese how utterly horrible English is! Subject-verb agreement... what were we thinking with that one? Even our regular verbs are irregular. The alphabet's easy, only 26 letters right? Well, until you realise they can combine into like, 8,000 different phonemes.

I have so much respect for anyone who comes from somewhere like Japan or Korea that has a sensible native language, and learns to speak English.

No, but I learned it in school and my friends were from different countries (Australia, Singapore, US) so it was the only language we had in common to communicate with each other. English is not my first language, but I am better at speaking, reading, and writing it than I am with my native language.

My first language is Tagalog, by the way. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines. I spoke mainly Taglish though, which is Tagalog-English. Heh...

Swedish is my first language. English is my second language. It was mandatory to take english classes in school, so there is that.

My first language is English. I had 4 years of high school Spanish that I never used.

Then I got drafted into the Army and ended up in Seoul, Korea for 18 months. Many happy memories!!
I moved off base even though it was against the rules & lived with my girlfriend, a part time University student.
I immersed myself into the world she lived in and quickly started to learn the language-customs I needed.

Since you dont want to hear more of my life I will say that if you dont keep using your second language
it fades away. In 40 yrs I've lost most of my skills. I still have understanding of Korean on some level as
so much of what I hear I kind of get a feeling for.

I am trying to learn Japanese so I can get a better feel for for anime dialog.
The subs generally are pretty good, but at times go bad. An english proof reader would bee a good idea.
But what do I know.

I love K-Drama's and am really upset about losing them here on CR.

Norwegian here, sort of. Was born in Romania, but moved to Norway as a 4yo. Talked English with the ones working in the kindergarden. Its amazing what kids learn watching cartoon network.

English is my first and basically my only. I took 4-5 years of elementary school spanish in private school but the majority's been stashed in my memory, and I'm currently trying to relearn the language knowledge of spanish that I've lost. I've picked up some japanese from anime, but it at best is amateur.
