Police are investigating a fifth-grade boy who allegedly posted a "death note" in his elementary school near Pittsburgh this past week. Burrell School District superintendent Shannon Wagner said that the note with the names of five or six other boys was found on a wall in Stewart Elementary School in Lower Burrell. Wagner added, "After conducting the investigation, we found it is based on the anime, Death Note."

The kid was probably being bullied or something.

Is Death Note really appropriate for a 5th Grader? I mean, it is shonen, but....

They should be thankful it was just a Death Note. I don't see why these school officials feel the need to punish children severely for such things. We all need a way to vent and release our pent-up frustrations with the world around us. Writing down names of people who've wronged them, hurt them, or angered them in an imaginary "Death Note" is one way that these kids might be releasing these emotions. It's not like they're actually hurting anyone. I'm sure the school officials and authorities feel like they need to do something to prevent anything more serious from happening, but I think that they are seriously missing an important chance to try and make a difference in these kids' lives.

Why don't they talk to the boy? Ask him what it's for and why he did it. Not interrogate him, but sincerely try to figure out if there's an underlying problem there. Why those names? Who are they and why would he want them to die? Simply punishing him and viewing his actions as threatening is not going to help him, in my opinion.

They'll investigate you over pretty much anything, to be honest. Also, make note to never bring a (fake) death-note to school.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure almost no one cares how old it is.

Kid writes death note.
School blames anime.
Kid gets in trouble.
Ignores the fact that kid was probably bullied.
Does nothing to bullies.

I'll take this school pizza and eat it. *eats pizza in an overly dramatic way*

I don't see why this needed to make news headlines....well I kind of do if they took it as the kid making a hit list. The kid most likely was thinking of it in the way of the anime. However school officials and the police, who may not know what Death Note is, saw the title and the names and figured it was a hit list. I can't blame the school officials and police for being cautious as with the way school shootings seem to happen so often now.

Because the school board are selfish lazy shits who would rather take the easy way out and tell a kid to stop writting people's names in books rather than trying to find the bullies and make them stop.

Blaming anime is just more convenient.
