So this news article got me thinking since Ghibli has run out of ideas, why don't they just try animating some mangas or light novels for the time being?

However, I'm not familiar with any mangas or light novels that would fit the Ghibli style, so I thought maybe asking some of you would be a good/fun idea.

So which mangas and/or light novels would you like to see Studio Ghibli animate?

Oreimo or Yosuga no Sora, which is a vn I know. I mean, they already went down the incest lane with From Up On Poppy Hill, so might as well go all the way, amirite?

They could also do a loose adaptation based on one of Ever17's routes, probably kid's route, and remove the overall plot and focus purely on that route alone.

I'll be honest here. There are two type of series I want the the studio to adapt:

1) Older manga (there's a recent trend of this lately)
2) Fantasy genre

I think either one or a combination of both would work. For a list, I'd say Shokoku no Altair, Vinland Saga, Eden: It's an Endless World!, Battle Royale (reading this right now), and maybe some of the older Lupin series for a remake with better animation quality.

No LN adaptations please except perhaps Kino's Journey but I haven't read that before so I have no idea how that will work out. Kino's Journey does have an anime but I want to see the remaining novels being adapted.

I agree with you that an older series and the fantasy genre would be a good fit. With an older series, they could update it with their art and it would probably be a nice touch. Also the fantasy genre would be a great fit too.

Those were some interesting picks you chose; I looked up Altair and that seems like something that would fit them well.

Studio Ghibli seems to like using western stories (Howl's, Ronja, Arrietty, etc.), so it'd be cool if they animated some more of those. Could you imagine if Studio Ghibli animated something like the Lord of the Rings? Granted that one's probably not going to happen considering the movies, but it would be awesome. Dune, some of the Dragon Riders of Pern novels, Wheel of Time, Codex Alera, or any other fantasy/scifi story with a big world to animate would go really well with their strengths of animated really awesome looking scenery.

Someone really needs to make a Dune anime.

There's a 1977 version of The Hobbit, which was done by a studio called Topcraft, which was later purchased by Miyazaki and became Ghibi. So there actually is somewhat of a connection already.

Off-topic, people bash that version, but I personally love it. That may be due to the fact that I watched it during the broadcast premier, and it scared the shit out of me, but it was also the start of my love for all things Tolkien.

Dragon Riders of Pern novels

I would love to see something like this myself.

I watched that version of the Hobbit so many times as a kid that I can't remember if I ever read the book. It's also one of the movies I watched a lot as a kid that I haven't managed to get on dvd yet.

Studio Ghibli and a Record of Lodoss War reboot would be an interesting combination.

I have faith they'll keep going, they could do some traditional tales that haven't been touched like a collection of old fairy tales that actually exist together. Old lady in the shoe, jack & jill, the ruby shoes, etc.

They could do sequels to their classics or other films that reveal its same universe, i.e. kiki's daughter on her adventures, or the baron on another magical journey.

They could branch out into genres they've never touched, though this is the most unlikely given what they have done.

Fruits basket would be good choice, though it's likely never to happen.
