SWATTED. Swatting' victim to harassers: Ten cops pointed guns at my little brother
Posted 2/9/15

Armed law enforcement, summoned by a hoax call, raided the home of a popular Runescape livestreamer last week which prompted this emotional message in which the gamer describes his 10-year-old brother being held at gunpoint.

Joshua Peters, who lives in Minnesota and livestreams as "koopatroopa787," uploaded this video on Thursday, following a raid on his home that was captured during a streaming session. No one was hurt in the call to his home, placed by a person still unknown, for reasons also unknown.

"I don't give a shit about what you have against me online," Peters says. "Your gripe is with me, so let it be with me. Do not involve my family in any way shape or form. They don't deserve that."

"He's 10 years old, and he had 10 police officers pointing a gun at him, because he was at the door," Peters says, before breaking down completely.

The practice is sometimes called "swatting," for the SWAT team it's supposed to send to someone's home on rumors of a hostage-taking, shooting or some other urgent and potentially violent crime. The police's arrival has been captured on other livestreams before.

There have been no reports of police harming someone during a "swatting" raid — though there have been other high profile stories of injuries and even death when police have intended to raid an address, but themselves got the wrong one. Needless to say, swatting victims still find it incredibly distressing to have firearms pointed at them and local law enforcement ends up outraged at having its time and resources wasted.

In November, a developer at Bungie was the victim of a swatting in suburban Seattle. In August, someone swatted a Counter-Strike player in Littleton, Colo. (southwest of Denver) and the incident closed down a nearby school. Just recently a Nevada man was arrested in connection with a swatting he called on a Naperville, Ill. video gamer in July. He faces five years in prison.

This is by no means a comprehensive account of game-related swatting incidents, even over the past year.

Alleged swatting prankster “Famed God” arrested in Las Vegas
Teen's computers point to swatting incidents nationwide, authorities said.

A 19-year-old Las Vegas teen is expected to appear in court Monday, days after being arrested in connection to a July swatting incident in suburban Illinois.

Will County state's attorney's office
Brandon Wilson, who goes by the online handle "Famed God," was arrested Thursday in Nevada and faces an extradition hearing to determine whether he should be sent to face hacking and other charges. Illinois prosecutors said there was evidence on his computers about the July 10 swatting incident, in which he allegedly reported a murder to Naperville's emergency 911 line. The SWAT team responded, but the call was a hoax.

The Chicago-Sun Times said that, in addition to the Naperville incident, the suspect's computers held evidence "of similar incidents across the country."

The teen's arrest coincidently came the same day as a popular online gamer, Joshua Peters, aka Koopatroopa787, was swatted while thousands were watching him live stream on Twitch.

Swatting has seemingly become a national phenomenon in the online gaming world, with pranksters calling police and claiming that heinous crimes are underway at a certain location. That usually prompts armed SWAT teams to arrive at the scene. Often, the prank call appears to be coming from the innocent target's address.

"Famed God," meanwhile, is also said to have hacked the gaming consoles owned by two others and threatened to put somebody "in debt for life" by accessing banking information. Illinois prosecutors said charges Wilson faces include computer tampering, intimidation, and identity theft. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.[/quote

Because trolls have crossed over to real life, it's not going to stop unless there is a way to identify which calls are pranks, unfortunately this can also lead to real calls not being taken seriously. It's sad but I don't see how these things can be stopped, these guys take it trolling too far, and either they don't understand or don't care that people will be seriously hurt if this continues.

People still play Runescape?

At least this was caught on live camera so he can have proof of the incident. The idiot who did this to him and his brother should go to jail. The sad thing is that I can imagine the game being the motivation for doing this.

I look forward to the douche being caught, tried, and convicted. It's a hard lesson to learn the potentially steep penalties of offline trolling.

I imagine it will start to become less common when people realize that there are some pretty severe consequences. Police will probably just have to deal with it for now but once people start spending time in jail potential harassers will probably start to think twice about indulging their rage or jealousy.

The guy is obviously an arse. But as a general rule you shouldn't be posting your personal information to the internet where someone can easily find it and use it against you for purposes such as these.
