Since I arrived at university, I've asked and answered this question many times. The only problem is that everybody seems to answer it differently.

So far it seems that everybody I've met from the west of Scotland answers with their hometown (with only one answering with the nearest city) but people from around Edinburgh tend to answer with their nearest city. The only exception is people from Fife who often say their county - which is Fife. My Highland friend said his hometown despite the fact that nobody had heard of it. I also have a few English friends who answer the question differently. One answers with his county (represented in the poll by state) with his reason being that nobody up here will have heard of either Wakefield or Knottingley . My other English friend simply replied with his hometown.

Despite those, on the internet I usually see people replying with their hometown and their state - leaving out the country they were from. I don't know if other Europeans reply with their nearest cities or if they actually live in the city they specify.

I personally reply with my hometown which confuses people greatly because they expect me to say "China" or something. Usually it leads to a pause and then them saying "oh, I know Hamilton! There's a football team there!" On the internet I said the UK for a while until I got to an age where I didn't have to worry about giving out personal information - so I now say Scotland.

Since we have an international community here on CR, I try to be as general as possible (when posting a reply) by giving my state and country. If anyone is interested in more details, I'm more than happy to share the information.

I'm curious as to why some subscribers don't like to (or refuse to) state their location on their profiles. Personally, I find it fascinating to read what other people from different corners of the world have to say about topics posted here!

Usually if I don't know the person I just say Mother Earth, just to get their reactions and then ask them if it really matters, I only disclose my location to people I know well. Anyways I always noticed plenty of people answer city-Country especially from people outside America

I usually just say my country, and then I clarify if anyone asks for specifics. I live in one of the smaller provinces, so most people who aren't Canadian don't know where I'm from when I give "New Brunswick" as an answer, and Americans tend to think I'm talking about an American city called New Brunswick (in New Jersey, I believe?) unless I specify Canada too... and idk, I've always found it excessive to answer with my city, province AND country. So, Canada it is!

Military Child, so I have to ask what the asker is asking.

Does he/she mean:
1) Where I was born?
2) Where I was recently?
3) Where I spent my childhood/ adolescence?
4) Where I work/worked?
5) Where I am a resident of?
6) Where I lived the longest?
7) Where I currently live?

Fun fact: All of those answers are different for me
