To be sure you can say pretty much the same for any character in the show other than the ones that trained Naturo or whatever current enemy/rival that's in the story.

She is far from a really likable character but she was very useful in developing other characters and advancing plot. Starting the series she had a lot to do with developing the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke, considering how the start of any series is make or break she did good. Helped transition into introducing Ino's team early on as well. Plus the whole next gen legendary ninjas thing wouldn't work with out her and I think everyone really enjoyed that. Definitely necessary no matter how much we hate her.

Sakura is not useless! you see her problem is that naruto and sasuke are to powerful! If you were to put her into another team she would out shine them, and they wouldn't be able to keep up with her. After all not everyone can become the Hokages student and have the same ability or maybe even greater than her master. But I think the only other reason they call her useless is because she is a late bloomer when it came to having the power she now possess, because if you look back and watch the first few episodes of Naruto and then watch Naruto Shippuden Ha I don't think you would ever call her useless again.

Ya'll for real?

Eurgh. I can't stand when people call Sakura useless...

Yawn. Try this on for size:

Statistically Sakura is the best girl. She ranks higher than all of the Konoha 12 females, even higher than Temari - the strongest female of the Sand. She ranks higher than the rest of the Konoha boys, losing out to only Sasuke and Neji (the stat difference between Sakura and Neji is one single point!)

That's right. Shino, Shikamaru, Lee... Just 3 examples of who Sakura beats in skill. Do they ever get called useless?

Here's the killer:
Sakura actually ranks the same as Naruto... Hm, how about that... Still useless?

- She surpassed Tsunade in her teens. She surpassed a Kage in her teens...
- She is part of the next generation sannin, accompanying Naruto and Sasuke.

I won't go into her accomplishments, since a few people here already have. But I have provided canon fact, supported by official stats.

So tell me again... How is Sakura Haruno useless?

I was once a huge Naruto fan but then Shipuden happened which I believe is like Naruto GT. If you don't get what I mean it fails in comparison to its predecessor. That being said Sakura has an important role as a healer. So she is important to the series... Wrong. The fact that she is a bad character out weighs her usefulness as a healer because 1 most people would be fine if medical ninja where all side characters whose names you didn't bother remembering or 2 if Sakura was replaced by or was a medical ninja that is actually a good character. Now to be honest there are a lot good characters in Naruto that where completely abandoned in Shipuden to focus on Naruto Sakura and Sai. After writing this I realize why I dislike Shipuden so much because in my opinion Shipuden's Naruto is way way way worse than Naruto's (series) Naruto, Sai is one of the most uninteresting characters ever, and Sakura is a character whose main motivation is centered around loving Sasuke for no other reason than he's "cute" and she worked with him for a few months.

Not to rain on your parade of Official stats, but Neji died in the great Ninja war in which Naruto was a hero in. And according to you Neji has higher stats than Naruto and Sakura.

But even if She is the strongest or 3rd strongest it doesn't make her useful if she doesn't do anything. Just off the top of my head good things Sakura has done in the entire series was defeat Sasori, and she had help. She also slowed down Sound Ninja from killing a knocked out Sasuke and Naruto before InoShikaCho and Rock Lee stoped them.

Seriously in over 400 episodes those 2 things are all of the Noticeable things Sakura has done, it doesn't matter if she can summon all 10 tailed beast at once then take them all down by poking the air in front of their faces if she doesn't do anything in the series she is useless

Haveta admit, watchin' her stand against Sasori was impressive.......... but thereafter, aside from being helpful as a medic, there aint much to say about her character. Fast forward to the ninja war and past chapter 700 of the manga and onto the Gaiden series, she still lacks lustre in my opinion.

I'm aware of the timeline and plot... Regardless of his death, Neji's skills still stand. He was regarded a genius and was the first of the Konoha 12 to upgrade to Jonin status, not to mention that he was a little older than the rookie 9 too. So Sakura being a point under him in skill is still impressive. Also, the relation and comparison of said stats come from the same databook, so they stand as fact regardless of his demise in the latter chapters of part two.

The actual definition of useful means to be competent in a particular area. It is to be practical, helpful, serviceable and used for purpose. Sakura is a healer... Because of which, these adjectives apply to her tenfold.

As a healer, Sakura can't be offensive! Those are the strict rules of the medical ninja code:

"Rule No. 2 - No medical ninja shall ever stand on the front lines."

Not until they have mastered the S-Rank technique Byakugo (Strength of a Hundred Technique) are they allowed to disregard the medic laws and move to the front lines.

"Rule No. 4 - Only those medic ninja who have mastered the Strength of a Hundred Technique of the ninja art Creation Rebirth are permitted to discard the above mentioned laws."

Sakura did not release this technique until half way through the war, at the age of 17. Which means that prior to this, not only was she not permitted to be offensive by medic law, but she was also not even using full strength, as she was storing it.

Usefulness is not measured by throwing punches, especially by exact definition. It is much more useful, by accurate meaning of the word, to heal and help out. To be sure those on the front lines don't die.

Sakura has saved lives... Yet the Sasori fight and her part one spat with the Sound are all you can remember? She saved Kankuro's life. Not to mention that she manually pumped Naruto's heart with her hand.

Let's be honest here, completely based off of what you see in the Ninja war who wins a fight Neji or Naruto? I would put money on Naruto every time. If Neji was stronger than Naruto why wasn't he in Lead or at least right there next to Naruto in the fight against Madara and Obito but instead it was in the background. Also to further discredit Naruto Official. Lets look at the Kakashi. The Man that has copied over 1000 jutsu. 1 i haven't seen him use 100 jutsu let alone 1000. 2 his chakra element is lightning how can he match Zabuza with water jutsu. Also If he can match Zabuza with water jutsu why wasn't he able to beat him easily? Officially Naruto is a mess.

Now is Sakura Useful? Yes she is a healer, however, if you base usefulness on being able to heal every no name medic in the tent is "useful". Every Ninja that went on the battle field and aided in taking out at least one enemy is "useful". I'm basing usefulness off of adding to the story. Which she doesn't really do and she is one of the 4 main characters. In fact her biggest influence was one of the worst things that happened to the series as a whole (making Naruto promise to bring back Sasuke). Sure she can heal and yea she can even hold her own in some fights, but she doesn't fight and there are tons of medical ninja so whats the point.

The only reason I brought Naruto and Neji up is because they are already considered two of the best, so by using them as a comparison device and measurement of skill, it in turn shows how great Sakura is. The question at hand here is how useful Sakura is, not how much she can contribute to the plot. That is your definition of useful. The only reason she would lack influence to the storyline is because that is how Kishi wrote her... So when are people going to stop holding female characters accountable for what their male writers didn't do for them? It's the same in almost every shonen.

"...there are tons of medical ninja..."
Medical ninjas are of utmost important - that was dramatically focused on, emphasised and explained in part one when we saw Tsunade's backstory. Sakura isn't just some other medical ninja - she is Tsunade's successor, the greatest medic in history.

Sakura has contributed to the plot in many ways. Of course she isn't going to be the sole focus due to the series being a shonen and the spotlight always being on Naruto and Sasuke. But:

~ In part one Sakura is introduced as Naruto's love interest and the reason he wants to strive to impress her over Sasuke - his rivalry with Sasuke is slightly spiteful at this point. Onto the prologue (the Land of Waves arc) and Sakura is the only member of team 7 with perfect chakra control and able to complete the tree excerise on her first try. Her success leads Naruto and Sasuke's rivalry and friendship/cooperation to spark more so after she gives Naruto advice on mastering the technique and Sasuke is reluctant to ask. They become closer after Naruto teases him in which their bond first takes its turn into being a true friendship. It is because of this that Naruto later saves Sasuke from Haku and unleashes the Kyuubi's chakra for the first time. See how Sakura is the basis of the most fundamental starting point in Naruto? Not to mention of course Naruto's talk with Haku prior to this, where he realises he has someone that he loves and someone worth protecting (Sakura) which leads him to bring the Demon of the Hidden Mist, Zubuza, to tears with his speech on said love.

~ Moving to the Chunin Exams arc - Sakura's turning point. This arc is full of her influence! First she sparks the Sand Siblings introduction and tension between Gaara/Kankuro/Sasuke by chasing Konohamaru and Naruto into them. Sakura is the first to notice and explain the illusion Kotetsu and Izumo play on them before the exam, which was regarded as a mini test to qualify the genin into the written exam - of which Sakura was one of only two or so students that did not have to cheat. Her reveal of the genjutsu sparks Lee's interest when Kotetsu attempts to test Sasuke with an attack and Lee stops it, which in turn prompts Neji to ask who Sasuke is whilst Lee hits on Sakura. When his attempt at flirting fails, Lee sees Sakura take Sasuke (and Naruto) by the hand is prompted to challenge Sasuke to a fight.

I've just realised how long this is going to be so I'll try to speak in shortened sentences:
Chunin Exams:

~ Sakura catches Sasuke when Lee kicks his ass. Sasuke feels closer to them as a team and smiles fondly at his friendship with them on a whole. Sakura enabled them to compete in the exams as she almost didn't turn up due to lack of confidence in her skill. Sasuke encouraged her confidence to join which shows him growing closer to his team. Sakura encourages Naruto when he's scared of the exam and almost disqualifies herself when she sees Naruto is too afraid to due to his fear of disappointing his team. She was focused on the most during the written exam - she was the voice of explanation to the audience, as she always is. This is a major plot device and extremely useful in letting the audience know crucial facts.

~ Sakura cutting her hair was complete symbolism - that's fact. She knew that she lacked in skill and fell behind Sasuke and Naruto. One of her most well known phrases is "now it's your turn... to watch my back!" - she could finally stand in front of them, protect them, be the lead. She defended Sasuke, Naruto and Lee whilst they were unconscious. She fought all 3 of the strongest Sound members, personally trained under Orochimaru. She took numerous kunai's to the body. Ino stepped in and forced the rest of her team to, which lead to a major plot point/backstory of Ino and Sakura's friendship, which of course shared a little likeness to Naruto and Sasuke and allowed Naruto and Sakura to grow closer when he sparks her inner personality to defeat Ino's justu. It also allowed Sakura's obsession with Sasuke to deteriorate as she began to move past the “annoying” girl who solely cared for and craved Sasuke’s attention. She wanted him to acknowledge her now, to notice her strength, her true self. She began to shine and work hard.

~ Sakura was the reason for Sasuke's awakening and full strength/hatred being unleashed with the curse seal when he saw what the Sound did to her. She was also the reason he was able to control it. Jumping forward because this is already getting too long: Sakura stepped in to protect Sasuke against Gaara, which resulted in Sasuke telling Naruto that he knew what was important now (after experiencing the fondness of power) and that he must protect Sakura at all costs. Which lead Naruto to his fight with Gaara and we all know the importance of that fight... It of course lead to their bond as jinchuriki, which leads to the opening arc of part two:

(Inbetween this remember of course that Sakura sparked the entire plot of Shippuden - Sasuke's retrieval. Also the Sasuke retrieval squad, which was the first time we saw the Konoha boys in their ultimate strength, of course leading to Sasuke and Naruto's first fight and the Sand Siblings strengthening their new found bond with Konoha by saving Kiba, Shikamaru and Naruto. All because Sakura begged him to save Sasuke. Sakura trained under Tsunade which was also influence to the plot as they were able to become the next generation Sannin.)

~ Sakura saves Kankuro's life. Inspires Chiyo, a woman with severe hate for the Leaf. That is why she fought with Sakura to defeat Sasori - to show their bond and Chiyo's opinion of the Leaf changing because of Sakura. Especially since she was Tsunade's apprentice, a girl Chiyo seemed to strongly dislike. Not because "she just needed help" - it was plot device by Kishi, as Sakura always is - a communication between the author and the audience. Chiyo was also the only one who knew Sasori so she needed to be there.

Quick power through:

~ Sakura being the reason Sai was able to understand human emotion and turn "good". Naruto wanting to master the Kyuubi's power because he hurt Sakura! Sakura saves countless lives in the destruction of the Leaf by Pein. She makes Naruto realise that he wants to go after Sasuke regardless. She sparks Naruto and Sasuke's reunion, in which they confront each other and Naruto tells Sasuke he'll save him from the darkness. Kakashi is able to see what Sasuke has become thanks to Sakura. She was the first to find out that the white Zetsus had infiltrated the army by impersonating people! She saved countless lives. Awakened her seal and even Hashirama said she succeeded Tsunade. She saved Naruto's life! More things happen but they're spoilers...

I've already gone into the real definition of useful. Now I've minimally explored your definition and Sakura's influence on the plot.

As I said, of course she isn't going to be the sole focus due to the series being a shonen and the spotlight always being on Naruto and Sasuke. But she is the voice of explanation to the audience. Being such is a major plot device and extremely useful in letting the audience know crucial facts. Sakura sparks the basis of most of the fundamental starting points in Naruto. There you go - her influence on the plot. Your definition of useful and the real definition. Sakura is not useless.
