They do it because of peer pressure by their brethren. All the cool caterpillars cocoon themselves these days. They become a butterfly and get high as fuck then laugh at the fat caterpillars like they're above them since they technically are. Don't be a square, kids. Cocoon your ass and you'll make it onto the football team ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

If they liquefy as part of their transformation, is their consciousness even the same afterwards? (Assuming insects have consciousness, I guess; I admittedly haven't looked into it.) Is a butterfly the same creature as the caterpillar it once was in any significant way, or does the caterpillar's consciousness die to be replaced by that of the butterfly?

Butterflies scare me all of a sudden.

I think they suddenly get this vague urge that they're about to be re-born, so they're like "i must prepare for the second coming"

According to the article, yes, their neurons remain and are incorporated into the more complex butterfly brain, and as such, they DO retain memories.. O.o

Why are they even called butterflies? They have absolutely nothing to do with butter in the first place! Secondly, they aren't even flies!!! And everyone knows that Caterpillars are those huge yellow construction machines!!!

Probably not, upon birth at least, much like children are born without the knowledge that they'll become adults. I don't know.
