So recent botched lethal injections have driven some lawmakers into thinking of bringing back more "effective" ways of killing people. Yesterday, the Utah House approved a bill that would allow executions by firing squads and two lawmakers in Oklahoma are pressing their state to use gas chambers. I seriously wonder whether we are living in 2015 at this point. Should we even have the death penalty at all?

Can we make a section for more serious discussions or separate them into their own forum away from the general off topic? It's not that I'm against having conversations about this stuff but I definitely don't come to crunchyroll to debate political stances or religious viewpoints. There are just to many thought provoking threads and I just want to see anime GIFs and junk. Just my two cents.

On related news, Pennsylvania's new governor just halt all death penalties in the state and it causes outcry.

There used to be one. It was merged into general during the recent forum shakeup. I raised pretty much the exact same point objecting to the merge (albeit from the opposite perspective--I don't want lolcats in my SRS BIZNISS thread) , and I wasn't the only one.

It was slow, but I miss it.

So, anyway, about the death penalty.

In my youth I was an avid supporter of it. I believed that it was effective as a deterrent, that it was cheaper, and that it was just an all-round good thing to have around. If nothing else, it's another bargaining chip.

I was wrong on all counts. Well, I suppose except one--it certainly is a bargaining chip a prosecutor can use to try and coax a suspect into some deal.

I do still believe that some crimes are so heinous that nothing else would do. I might let a man who killed someone in a fight rot in jail, but I would hang Hitler. Death should be reserved for extreme cases, but the trouble is who decides which ones are extreme?

prisons cost tax payers 39 billion dollars. if we have fewer prisoners, the better it is for us in the long run. To be blunt executions have to continue on the useless murdering fuck ups in our society who are just rotting in prison serving stupid sentences of 200 plus years. then another thing must happen the war on drugs has to end legalize all drugs that will generate extra tax income and people will not be going to prison for 5 to 10 for petty drug crimes.

You'd support legalizing things like heroine and letting just anyone get prescription drugs without a prescription? Honestly I think most drug laws are good, besides weed not being legal, because it prevents people who aren't complete wastoids and are just on a bad bender from completely messing themselves up. What justification could you have for legalizing heroine and stuff?

people are doing these drugs regardless of the laws that are in place. why should tax payers have to pay for them to sit in jail have free food free heat free lodging. i know the major drugs are bad i had a friend die from heroin overdose we found her with the needle still stuck in her arm and another close friend who we have tried to get help for him many times. yesterday i found out he is pimping out his girlfriend to buy heroin. no matter what we do drug addicts will not stop you set it up just like alcohol age limit and let the people make there own decisions like they are already going to do

The death penalty should be used much more frequently! Bring back hanging, firing squads, and Ol' Sparky!! "Cruel and unusual" has been much to broadly interpreted. Appeals should be limited and the time from conviction to sentence being carried out needs to be drastically shortened and the cost reduced. The Insanity defense should be nearly impossible to use.

Death penalties are a no go for me. You'd be no worse than the criminal themselves. Just keep em' in prison.

It's barbaric and unnecessary. It should have no place in civilized society.

Hmm, I agree that it's barbaric but it is most definitely necessary. Just sayin.

Speed up the death penalty process. Stop giving people so many chances to avoid it and just clear out the waiting list. Use whatever method kills them effectively. I don't care how much pain is involved or how messy it looks. Those on death row cost too much money to keep alive. People with life sentences should just go ahead and be executed too IMO. Prisons are all too crowded.

I'm pro-death penalty. You can say,Oh it is inhumane, unnecessary ,or even pointless, but you haven't seen a different point of view yet. Also, before I explain I'm saying this on a political view not a religious view or belief , I'll safe that for another time. Well for one there are people out there (for example Hitler) who you can say deserve the death penalty , you know killing about billions of jews..., but look what if a person killed your family and he got nothing but 30-40 years ( just think of a situation don't say he will proably get life) I suppose its inhumane to get justice for your family. Secondly, this justice system is stupid anyway If im white and say im retarted or insane I can get out of anything. Basically you say the death penalty is humane because you haven't experienced something that hasn't affected you or your family ...

Also on a economic level , I believe it should be done as quick as possible . No more chance ( Like I said " If im white and say im retarted or insane I can get out of anything". It is costly.

One reason that death penalties are wrong is that, maybe someone was framed or some misunderstanding happened, and that man/female was put into death sentence without others trying to understand their situation, end up dying for no reason, and under someone else's crime that they did not commit.
