Flag: In the midst of a civil war in a small Asian country, a photograph of several civilians praying behind a flag galvanizes public opinion, and speeds along the peace process. But before an agreement can be signed, the flag is stolen, and the photographer who snapped the picture is sent along with the special UN squad, who are armed with HAVWCs (mechs), in order to document the squad's retrieval of the flag before the peace talks can break down.

The story is told entirely through various lenses (cameras, camcorders, etc.), and while that alone is enough to make it unique, they do a wonderful job of building the world and characters, that the ending is difficult to get through unscathed, even when you know what's coming.

I would recommend Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. It is the story by Dumas told from the children's point of view and started in the middle so the plot(s) are discovered, not in chronological order like the original. I am reading the original now; over 1100 pages, and the introduction states, "one of the most gripping novels, and one of the most badly written of all time". It is a great story, and it is a slog to read. As the story unfolds, take note about who did what to whom. As a bonus, the art style is unique and fits the 'mood' of the story.

Serial Experiments Lain. Seriously just watch it it will screw you up. It's hard to explain the plot it's basically all about a girl called Lain it touches on philosophy and spirituality.religion etc. Very ahead of it's time it predicted just how important the Internet would become to the world and the rise of groups like Anonymous, hacktivists. The basic idea is looking at the importance of the Internet and if people could create a God online and if a person did become a God worshipped by many what would they do with the responsibility of being God? The plot is so complex and brilliant that even University classes have studied the show in.

Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere - a surreal series set in the far future where humanity has ascended to the heavenly plane only to crash back to Earth. Desiring to ascend again but with no knowledge of how to do so, humanity hits on the idea of trying to recreate the contents of a history book as accurately as possible so they can repeat what they did right the first time. The series is set around 1600 years after the fall, where the far east has reached Japan's warring states period. The complexity of the series comes from many characters having two identities (their birth identity and the historical character they are meant to represent) and the mix of high tech flying ships, magic, divine intervention and skewed re-enactments of historical situations. That and the fact that the side characters are holding conversations on their equivalent of twitter while the action is going on in another part of the screen.
