There are parts I love of Fairy Tail, I love Lucy, I love Jellal, I love Laxus. They are great characters. A lot of Fairy Tail though is just extremely loud and silly. Like it takes the loud and silly parts of One Piece, and amplifies all that is wrong with them a thousand fold. I have the same problem with Naruto though, it has some very very good parts, and then it has some parts that make me question whether I actually ever liked the series at all in the first place.

To that end, Hunter x Hunter does something very unorthodox. It runs purely on suspense and mindgames. The comedy is light, the nakama power is almost nonexistent, and there is no romance at all. It's all suspense and novel depictions of one character getting the upper hand over another character. I am actually pretty sure that the lack of any attractive female protagonists in it is precisely so that no one will expect romance from it.

But we weren't talking about what we like and dislike, we were talking about what is best. And like I said it just has better written characters and story overall. Jellal and Laxus are good and I appreciate the effort of having a girl MC in a shounen but admittedly she's probably the worst of them and she is very pointless. In terms of how well written they are, it goes something like this: Wendy>=Erza>Jellal>Gray>Laxus>Natsu>Cana>Levy>Mavis=Ultear>Juvia>Gajeel>Lisanna>Lucy. Should be enough there. Also those ridiculous comedy moments help to build the characters and make them feel more like people. After all, I'm sure every one has tons of times where they were acting goofy with their friends. And it doesn't have to be heavy on comedy but HxH really passed up on the opportunity to do exactly that with a lot of its characters save for Gon and Killua. Maybe Kurapika as well. And then FT also executes the drama in it really nicely which is another thing I think HxH could benefit them. Don't get me wrong I think there were a couple of feels worthy moments in HxH as well but none as powerful as they could have been like they always are in FT. Love and hate what you want but Fairy Tail is just overall the objectively superior show.

I think Hunter x Hunter is so much better than Fairy Tail in every way it's not even funny.

I don't think Fairy Tail is very good though and I think Hunter x Hunter is one of the greatest peices of entertainment ever made.

I don't know how you managed to watch Hunter X Hunter and not laugh AND feel something punch you right in the feels in any moment involving Leorio. Or not laugh when Ging Freecs put up a stuffed panda that people were supposed to vote for, in place of himself.

Neon is obviously trolling

Fairy Tail is objectively the worst long running battle shonen out there.

FTFY

The repetitious and predictable story structure among all the awfully one dimensional characters are just few of its many fundamental flaws. The only thing that I found funny in Fairy Tail is how it overly relies on Deus Ex Machina. Each "arc" essentially goes like this : Characters meet powerful enemy -> Characters lose to enemy -> Characters magically reattain their abilities with a bonus to strength thanks to the power of friendship (awful writing) -> All characters overpower the enemy -> repeat. That's the sad structure of what is the worst anime I've ever seen in my life, Fairy Tail.

For anyone who is interested, Hunter X Hunter has recently been added to Toonami's 1:00 A.M. time slot. The second episode of this anime premiered last night on this network. As of now, I'm enjoying it. The story is a great combination of action and comedy.

Neon dude is...not wrong.

Except that he said HxH was just okay. It's completely garbage. Could've been good though if it had better writing, story, and characters instead of just killing off everyone who didn't matter.

IMDB anime ratings don't matter too much to me. I think MAL is a better source to measure quality and popularity since it has a lot more people rating shows.

Either way, HxH will be high no matter where it goes because it's an amazing show (imho).

This statement right here is probably one of the most ironic things I've read in a long time.

You'll see why don't worry. It sets itself up as a pretty standard show but it's where it takes things that makes it special.

I love this anime since the first version. I hope someday I can watch it on Crunchyroll. It's still unavailable in my country.

I started Hunter x Hunter a while ago, and I'm at the 93 episode. At first it was really fun, and I got through it fairy quickly, but then I got to the Chimera Ant arc, and it's boring..

Should I keep watching?

The Chimera Ant arc is long and slowly paced, but its finale is both exiting and emotional. If you really can't stand one more episode, then by all means drop it, but there's a good payoff imo if you stick through the slow stuff.

Yes, you should keep watching. The great thing about watching it now is that you don't have to wait a week in-between episodes. Lemme tell you, the Chimera Ant Arc is fantastic. While I like the Yorknew City Arc the best, the Chimera Ant Arc really does pay off despite being agonizingly slow at times.
