So I finally broke down and started to watch HxH. I am only at ep. 9, but i am already asking myself why is it so highly rated? I know I still have like 139 or so episodes to go, but still...

Things don't start getting really good until around the Phantom Troupe Arc.

Even though I don't know if I would say Hunter x Hunter is my favorite anime, I find it very hard to argue with it being at the top of anyone's anime list.

Except that he said HxH was just okay. It's completely garbage. Could've been good though if it had better writing, story, and characters instead of just killing off everyone who didn't matter.

Ok. Now there's a troll post.

I love HxH as much as the next guy. But I take IMDB ratings with a grain of salt since about 90% of the people there are asshats.

Hunter x Hunter is the best written shonen battle manga ever.

HxH is really great! Hard to pick *The Best* since the top 3 are all pretty close to each other. For me those are Gintama, FMAB, and HxH. I would not put Fairy Tail anywhere close to them. And especially not if we're talking about the writing.

Well, most of the series' hardcore fans had already been hooked by that point, but, for me, it didn't get interesting until the introduction of Nen in the late 20's and early 30's. As HxH's signature shonen super power, Nen adds an interesting and complex dimension to the series' fights. Much like the introduction of Stands in JoJo, HxH becomes all about Nen after its introduction. The arc after that introduces the highly popular Phantom Troupe and ramps up the violence.

I'm really surprised that the Hunter Exam arc didn't hook you. The "let's save Killua" arc is the worst of the lot and a serious letdown following the excellent Hunter Exam. The series really hits its stride after Nen--the power system in the HxH universe--is introduced.

Yet again why I am trying to figure out why this is such a highly regarded anime.

Not saying I don't like it. I am enjoying it just like any other shonen series I have gotten into, however I have yet to come across anything to sing it's praises over. It's a fun little show now that I made it past the first 3 episodes. But worthy of being considered one of the best anime ever? Perhaps not so much.
