This sort of thing is pretty prevelant in anime. There's a lot of non-yuri anime with this stuff in it. And that's not a problem for me... In fact, I personally think it's cuter.

However, it's rarer than yuri... I mean all they got is

okay... never mind, there's a lot more of that stuff than there is regular yuri... In fact, most of this stuff is classified as yuri just to make the genre not look as small. But yea... a lot of those shows feature real yuri between supporting characters while the main character has an ambiguous friendship. Or they have no yuri at all.

And well, it may just be because of the number of these anime, but most of the best ones I've seen fall more into this category than in yuri

I'm very fond of romantic friendships in anime, perhaps even more so than yuri, however, i'm less inclined to separate the two. But that gets into the thorny "what is yuri" debate i'd rather not deal with. Where does romantic friendship end and "yuri" begin?

So I say, if romantic friendships aren't yuri, then I guess i'm fine with that? Perhaps i'm a "romantic friendship fan" rather than a "yuri fan".

I think it's almost the idealized form of friendship. Not just the female-female variety, but the male-male variety as well. I don't see why relationships can't be intimate just because they lack the carnal aspect. It almost seems more noble without it.

But i'm ranting and rambling - perhaps just because I find this kind of topic interesting and I rarely see people mention romantic friendships around here.

yeah... it's hard to tell because nothing's really overt like seeing two schoolgirls kiss or anything, but a LOT of those are far more yuri than "romantic friendship". Also hidamari sketch is listed twice. And a few of those... like Blood+ No yuri no "romantic friendship". There MIGHT have been a hint of it in one or two eps dealing with an all girl's school, but seriously, that was it. Maria-sama.... that's straight up yuri from what I hear, and anything labelled "girl's school" is almost guaranteed to be straight up 100% yuri.

CCS and Gakuen Alice are downplayed in the anime series, but from what I hear, it's definitely yuri in the manga.

And ROD is yuri.

I think the "romantic friendship" thing is really an excuse for saying "THIS IS YURI BUT WE HAVE TO HIDE IT!!!!!!!!"

Hidamari sketch might fit in since it's 4 girls who are seriously uncomfortably close, without actually being Yuri hinted at..

I think it's cuter. I doubt the japanese would compromise on it if they actually wanted to make something yuri... and the first Maria-sama has a yuri couple, but the main characters have an ambiguous relationship... CCS is has some yuri undertones in the japanese version, but the english version played it down... The english version cuts them out a little... And it also cuts out the yaoi, so for that, I'll be watching the english.
