I'm black, and the more I get into anime, the more I meet other blacks my age who also like it. I had no idea that my cousins love it (I wish I had known when we were younger). Do more blacks admit to liking anime (per percentage than Caucasians) in their adult years because we don't care about the negative views and stereotypes associated with anime watching adults? My Caucasian buddy at work says he only talks about anime with me (he's in his mid 50s).

I'm part Asian and part German and I listen to hip hop music. I don't know if there's any other part Asian part German that listens the same as I do.

Most of the whites older than 24 I know won't really discuss anime openly unless you bring it up. You usually find out with random conversation or by the Naruto trading figurines one might keep in his/her office. Kind of funny, really, because a lot of them are the opposite when it comes to American comics in that they just won't shut up about them once they get going.

There's a number of reasons behind it but most of us have already prepared ourselves for the often wrong stereotypes about being an adult anime lover, so I don't think it would be fear of that as much as other factors. In regards to discussing it at work, I usually prefer to avoid it because I have a strict separation of personal life and work life (if it doesn't concern the company, it's none of their goddamn business) but I'll talk about it if it's brought up in conversation but I won't usually be proactive about it. Otherwise, I simply don't have friends to discuss it with, as I have the misfortune of having few anime savvy friends but many friends in American comics - all of whom won't shut up about it (I literally don't hear the end of it about DC vs Marvel and none of them seem to have the courtesy to know I don't give a damn about it.)

I couldn't really guess why other whites don't openly discuss anime above that age, maybe it's the notion that it would hurt them professionally (full time hired Facebook watchdogs and all.) Perhaps they don't want more traditional and conservative members of the family asking us about it (that's part of it for me.) Maybe it's other reason.

I think it's healthy to discuss your hobbies though. It's good that you're finding more people into anime at your age. Quite awesome that you found family that is into it, no less.

I'm black, 32 and openly love anime and video games. I have friends(4 black & 1 white) ranging from 28-40 and they are the same as i am. I personally know 2 people(1 black and 1 white), both in their mid to late 40s and are in the same boat as me.

I had absolutely no idea that you had to be a certain race to like something - thanks for pointing it out to me! Learn something new everyday.

I think everybody likes it, most are just afraid to admit it or realize it themselves.

Op never said anything about having to be a certain race to like anything. He pointed out in his personal life he knows more black people that openly talk about their like of anime.

I lived in japan for a couple years. Most white people I met there who weren't there for work were dicks. Over half of them were taking advantage of the Japanese love of foreigners that a lot of young girls have. Every black person I knew (1 from the Middle east, 1 from France, 2 from the US, and one from Mali was it? One of the northwest African countries I think...) was really into and respected the culture regardless of their reasons for living in Japan. All of them but 1 from the US were over 30. They'd wear traditional clothing for holidays and festivals, made an honest effort to learn the language/customs, and were some of the best conversation partners about Anime and Manga. It also helped that they all spoke English. My Japanese didn't improve to conversational standard until right before I returned (a week before the big earthquake). I could hardly even get any Japanese people to talk much about anime...

You are correct. Wow I didn't mean for this to inflame people. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm too old to get my panties in a bunch over the stereotypes, I was just making an observation of the people I personally know. Being a black biochemist/ engineer already alienates me from most people. I didn't mean too piss off a bunch of people. Let's go back to watching Oriemo....Sorry. By the way, my wife is Japanese and we have been married for 25 years and I did work for Sekisui Chemicals...waaay back in prehistory...when dinosaurs roamed the Earth... and anime was black and white...painted on rocks...
