You missed the point.

Wrong, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to the user above me who has long deleted their comment. My point was made in snark to their commentary which missed the point.

I'm black, and maybe in my generation I am too young to see the difference since most fans my age are very open with it regardless of race. But in hindsight in high school the only teacher I remember talking about anime and comics did happen to be black. He was around 40 at the time, and perhaps none of my non black teachers liked anime, and it is all coincidence, but figured relevant to OP to point out.

Interesting thought though.

But I also think you'd be less likely to find out on your own because they don't walk around with cat ears, forehead protectors and anime based merchandise.

Depends where you're from. I do, and know several that do. But depending what city/state I was in, it would be more or less common.

I am black and 39yo from Texas, and I love anime since I was in Jr. high. I think you have to check with people and also depends where you live sometimes. I never met more than one asian per school since I lived on the outside of Dallas (farmland and forest areas). I still ended up loving Anime and Martial Arts. Then, when I went to college in a more diverse city, I ended up studying Japanese and Chinese in college (Language Major) .

Comic-con in San Diego last year is where I met the most black people into anime and comics. I just got my tickets for 2015 (ノ^_^)ノ

I suppose it's common to identify yourself through your hobbies, but really it doesn't matter at the end of the day.
If we were to consider what others think of us with everything we do, we'd go mad.
Which probably explains why the entire first world seems to be in one form of therapy or another lol.

I feel like the the black part was unnecessary, I feel like it would sound pretty funny if I started a thread titled " Being Older White and Loving Anime ". Could have just said, I'm an older guy. Idk, I just thought it was kind of odd.

This is very interesting and when I think about it I have a lot of friends that I made during high school (that just so happened to be black) through the love of anime. Some I met myself others I was introduced to by my cousin who also loves anime. For me I guess it was only natural my uncles introduced me and my cousins to kung fu flicks at an early age. We grew up watching anime before we knew what anime was with shows like Robotech, Voltron, and Gigantor. Throw in the fact that I'm a big gamer I became infatuated with Japan once I learned a majority of the games I played at that time were made there not to mention the fact that their arcades looked so awesome in comparison to the ones in my hometown. So now I'm a huge anime, video game playing, martial artist and enthusiast that by the way just so happens to be black.

lol, it is rather odd, I had to look hard at the opening post all the while thinking that if he's black, i'd assume he'd know a lot of black people and his personal observation will amount to nothing and required no kick start as to how that is possible (more open about their love for anime). But then again, I can also see how he might also know a lot of white people too so... I think the thought that he might be forcing a non-thing into a valid point of view is what's making you feel odd about it.
