It has some incestuous moments in it. I liked it.

No, I'm not kidding.

No, it doesn't. Unless you completely misunderstood the movie.

"I will continue to love you, despite the fact we might be brother and sister."

Does that not sound incestuous?

I said incestuous, I didn't say it was actual incest. Being attracted to someone in that situation just screams incest to me. There was a sort of tabooness to be had at the situation, and given Ghibli's past performance, it was both bizarre and uplifting that they approach the topic in the way that it did.

There is no difference between "incest" and "incestuous" except that one is a noun and one is an adjective. They're the same thing.

But then how would we describe situation of possible mutual attraction between siblings? There's got to be a term for it. And I consider the moment where she admitted she couldn't control her feelings despite the situation incestuous. There's no doubt the entirety of the film skirts the realm of incest. By not being about incest, it was about incest. Denying the opposite had the effect of switching the topic to star crossed lovers, which skirts the territory of incest. The film was essentially about star crossed lovers. Why are they star crossed lovers? Possible incest. Therefore, the movie deals with the topic of incest by the two characters avoiding a relationship. There doesn't need to be actual incest to talk about incest.

Edit: I admit, I probably used the word incestuous incorrectly. The movie simply deals with the topic, not engage in it.

All of them, except When Marnie was There. The movie is coming out on home video in Japan next Wednesday. I'm very excited.

I've seen My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, Grave of the Fireflies, The Wind Rises, Porco Rosso, The Secret World of Arrietty, Whisper of the Heart, and Tales from Earthsea. This thread is actually a bit ironic since I recently finished my History Day project about Hayao Miyazaki ^_^ I'm also really hoping to see When Marnie Was There whenever GKids decides to pick it up :D

I own:

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke
Porco Rosso
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Ponyo
Arrietty
Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns
From Up on Poppy Hill
The Wind Rises

I just recently bought Pom Poko and The Tale of Princess Kaguya but haven't had time to watch them yet. I refuse to watch Grave of the Fireflies because I know I couldn't handle it. I'm always curious about Tales from Earthsea because I'm a Ghibli fan and a Earthsea fan, but I've heard it isn't very good. Opinions?

Howl's Moving Castle (about a million times)
Princess Mononoke (favorite)
Castle in the Sky
Porco Rosso
Arrietty
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Ponyo

I haven't seen Pom Poko, but I know someone who has. Apparently it's like some tripped out nature documentary about tanuki and is just really, really weird. I really just want David Attenborough to be the dub narrator.

The only ghibli film I haven't seen is where marine was there.

Otherwise I've seen every feature film they have done upto this point. Still have to get a few more to complete the set of them, not sure if I'd get grave of the fireflies considering how sad/dark it is, though I have got giovannis island so I'll probably get it at some point.
Been focusing on getting there anime and new ghibli while getting other ghibli films in deals/sales.

I look forward to the next ghibli film, it seems interesting but i hope that it isn't the last they make.
