The popular belief is the result of numerous past studies that found people with "boredom proneness" as lacking excitement and becoming easily frustrated or weary in challenging situations. But recent research finds that being bored promotes creative association and pushes one to find deeper meaning and satisfaction.

Ohhh no it doesn't. Being bored DOESN'T push me to find deeper meaning. It pushes me to the CR forums.

Is it good for you?

Well being bore or lazy is not a bad thing. People who get bore tend to look for or create way to remove the boredom witch in turn benefit us. Also being lazy means to look for a faster and better way of doing things.

_________

I completely disagree with the article. I view "boredom" as a negative emotion, not something that can bring forth positivity. When you are bored, as a young person, you do reckless things or unproductive things. Boredom, imo, is a negative side effect of higher intelligence.

What really makes me go into a creative mood is feeling inspired by something.

I think the "good" boredom may come from the freedom we have to just think about anything and imagine whatever we want. That is a very different type of thought process than our regular interactions with computers or other forms of technology.

Looks like another observational study were the correlation is presented as fact.
These studies can be misleading, for example an observational study found women who take hormones after menopause had
lower risk for heart disease, clinical trials proved opposite was actually true.

I hate how my tax money is funding a whole bunch of those kinds of "studies".

Yep, boredom is a third of the root of all evil, along with greed and callousness.

How do you end up feeling inspired by something? xD

I think the point was that feelings of boredom prompt you to "get up" and do something else. When you can't do something else, such as being stuck doing a repetitive task, your mind wanders and tries to "escape" -- which sometimes results in creativity. Creativity such as "How can I get out of doing this?" or "Couldn't I be doing something else that involves my brain a little more?"

When I'm doing nonsense tasks that should really be handled by computers at work, I do come up with ideas about other things I'm working on -- so much leftover brainpower not being utilized with the mundane duties that it diverts itself to solving real problems that are more interesting.

Compare these two people: Both work in a warehouse, and their job is to move boxes around all day, with no rhyme or reason that they are privy to. One person is entirely engrossed in the work, and devotes the entirety of their being to being the best box-mover possible. That person feels not an ounce of boredom while performing the job.

The other person does the work, but finds it extremely boring. They spend a portion of their unused brain on thinking of other jobs they might rather be doing, getting promoted out of doing the box job, or on ways to minimize how much time they spend on the meaningless movement of boxes, such as ways that the boxes could be sorted better, or coming up with ideas on machines that could do the job better thus freeing them from the boredom.

Which person is going to come up with a new idea or push themselves further?

They are researching because they're bored :)

You read a scientific study and opened up a discussion about it because *you* were bored You learned new stuff and heard opinions, even if you didn't ultimately agree with the research.

Yeah my dad was good at inspiring me. Things like....

"What the hell kind of a grade is this? You better bring this shit up before I take a switch to your ass!"
"You did what to my car? and my garage door? You better invent some kind o' time machine boy!"
"You better not get into a fist fight boy! If I catch you fighting, I'll take a switch to your ass, and if I find out you lost it'll be twice as bad!"
"Youre about to graduate from highschool son, you got two choices...go to college and get the F%*& outta my house, or go into the military and get the F%*& outta my house...either way you gotta get the F%*& outta my house. Better plan accordingly"

and last but not least
"Your girlfriend Hiroko is waaay better than you boy, and you ain't ever gonna do better. You better put a ring on that before I have to whup your ass."

Inspire...it's what fathers do, and he was never boring....
