Watch the movie "Enter the Void". It's on Netflix I think. Seems like the afterlife would be like that though.

This entire world is a pokeball. When the master summons you, you die and are sent into battle. When the master sends you back, you are reincarnated.

Well wouldn't we end up where we were before birth? Instant darkness is the obvious answer, but then I ask myself, "why do we have these experiences when we had nothing before birth?". Sometimes I think of this strange event as an awakening point of the soul or maybe a selected memory of one of the many lives we've had. The only way to truly know is when death takes us away from this reality we live in.

This is semantics, however remember some basic probability and multiverse type physics theories. If it can happen it has and will happen. We are merely a fragment of an n-dimesional "Ultrabeing" that spreads though multiple universes and timelines. So in a way when you die, it's like several sections of this "ultrabeing" of you dying in this local space time and perhaps several adjacent frames. In other frames you live on and may even be immortal in some. Therefore the "ultrabeing" of you is always alive somewhere in n-dimensional space. The individual cell (in this local space time frame) has expired, but the "ultrabeing" lives on as aware of the local death as a human is aware of the death of a single skin cell in it's body. Fear not, you exist now, have existed in the past and will exist in the future and other multiverses. There are an infinite number of you.

I think we rot in the ground, give birth to new life forms, which will eventually die, and the cycle continues till the universe fails to support life in a trillion or so years.

I myself would personally just like to rot in the ground when I'm done with living. Yeah.

You just described the idea behind Steins;Gate.

Just basic cosmology. You should read some of Keith Laumers books from the 1960's, if you like this kind of stuff. They make SG look like a primary for kindergarteners. Some of them are crazy funny also.

Try the Time Bender series
