Why do you eat fast food?
Posted 2/21/15 , edited 2/21/15
Americans love their fast food, no doubt about it. I never liked it though, and I still don't, who cares? Americans will continue to flock to fast food like bees to honey even with one less person, but why? Why do Americans love fast food so much? Why do they like it despite the eerie ingredients involved, the low food quality, trans fat, etc.

If you do indulge in fast food, why do you like it? Is it because of the convenience? Smell? Or maybe taste?

People like fast food because they are too lazy to cook or can't cook, or they are in a rush and in need of a quick meal.

Not all fast food is bad. I think the big reason people eat it so much is because it tastes good. Fat and sugar and salt are delicious.

I will eat it when I'm in a rush or have no good alternative. More for convenience reasons, since I prefer to cook if possible and my body is no longer able to comfortably digest a lot of grease and carbs.

I don't really eat at fast food restaurants, but if you're out running errands for 5 hours then there's really not that many better alternatives. Yes, there are more legitimate fancy restaurants, but after a day of errands anything will do.

Back when I ate fast food, it was usually convenience. I worked in the field, and didn't have the time for sit-down places and got sick of sandwiches. Especially in winter.

Fast food is mostly garbage food, but I think a lot of people eat it because of it being affordable and being convenient. On top of that, it is engineered to be really tasty. Sure they put a lot of garbage into it, but it is tasty. For this reason, a lot of people eat it to treat themselves to some tasty food.

A lot of people also eat it when they want to eat but don't have time for cooking something or going to a restaurant that is better (sit down, have a waiter, leave a tip, those kinds of places). Plus, fast food restaurants are cheaper. Just like how people will do pizza or subs, or some other take-out, people will also eat fast food because it is quick and convenient.

People always say it is cheap. But that just isn't the case. Eating at a fast food place for a family of four is going to be $20. I have several meals that I prepare that are nearly half that cost, and we will have leftovers for my wife to take for lunch the next day. Even if we compare the meals straight up, home cooked is cheaper.

A pound of ground beef is $4, I bake my own bread but I think a pack of buns is a bit over $2. A small bag of potatoes is ~$2. Add a head of lettuce and a tomato for another $3, and enjoy a salad on the side in addition to garnishing your burger. Add in the fractional cost of any condiments you have in the fridge and you are sitting just over $12.
