Well I suppose it would have been Yu-Gi-Oh!, Zatch Bell!, Pokemon, and a bit of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. I would always watch Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon if I saw them on TV, and I adored Zatch Bell! - (though I didn't see it quite as often) - so I guess you could say that's where my roots are. However, I didn't start knowingly watching anime until I was about 12 or 13 (which would have been about 4 or 5 years ago at the time of writing this) and I started out with watching Yu-Gi-Oh!, and then the original Pokemon. While I was knowingly watching anime at the time, it was more for the sake of nostalgia though, so I'm not sure if that counts.

Anyway, I started dating this girl that was really into anime and basically just Japan and Japanese culture as a whole. She said part of why she was dating me was because I reminded her of L from Death Note and that was one of her all-time favorite anime characters. So of course I had to watch Death Note after that. I loved it of course. Then everything just sort of grew from there. I needed more awesome anime, and a lot of my friends were really into anime at the time so I asked them for suggestions. I ended up watching and falling in love with Soul Eater, Clannad, Highschool of the Dead, Dragon Ball, and Fullmetal Alchemist because of that.

So if you want to go all the way back, I'll go with Pokemon as my answer. However, if you want to go only as far back as the anime that really got me to start watching more anime, then I would have to say Death Note is my answer.

In middle school I did watch a lot of anime, mostly Naruto, Pokemon, YuYu Hakasho, DBZ, and the like, but I never really felt like I was truly watching an anime, just something else that was on the TV. That is until by pure chance I woke up at around 3 AM and turned on Toonami and saw an ongoing episode of Blood+, I immediately needed to know more and that is what got me actively seeking out anime.

Ba-chan bought my sister Japanese Sailor Moon VHS tapes and she bought me Pokemon manga. I also watched Speed Racer but didn't even know it was an anime at the time. I think I got into it a lot more after reading and watching Dragon Ball Z.

it all started with the first epic encounter with vegeta and goku after that i didn't fully dive in till around 2008. I marathoned bleach and started to watch seasonal anime. Demon King Daimo I think was the first seasonal show I watched and the rest is history

I watched a lot of Digimon when I was young as well as Inuyasha. I got super into Inuyasha and Digimon, which probably led me to want to watch more, ending up watching some on the old toonami.

I actually got into anime and manga through those silly little American "how to draw anime" books, most of which I now realize are kind of.... horribly illustrated. I got into magical girl series firsthand because the books mentioned them, but I've obviously branched out since.

17 years ago, going into sixth grade, I broke my leg in 3 places skateboarding. I had nothing to do after school and no one wanted to hang out with my broke ass, so I watched Toonami after school. This would have been 1998 for the first month I watched, it was just a bunch of these old Johnny Quest/Thundercats/Space Ghost cartoons, it was kinda cool but they were so dated(there were some Superman episodes that I believe were from the 1940's). One day I flipped it on and they had this new show called Dragonball Z on along with what I remember Transformers: Beast Wars, Sailor Moon and Robotech. I was hooked after that.

OH BOOOOOY HERE WE GO, Well this is a story all about how, my life got flipped, turned upside down now I'd like to take a minute just sit right there I'll tell you about how I got roped in by Tatenashi's hair. Now that that's over, I got into anime about a year or two ago and it all started on this beautiful thing called IFunny. Yes I know horrible, right? Well lets just jump to it. I saw a clip of a scene of an Anime called Infinite Stratos, (First lets get this straight, at the time I had never watched anime before EVER so I saw this and I was like, "WOAH THATS A WEIRD ART STYLE, AND WAIT does that chick ha....hav......HAVE BLUE HAIR!!!"), I know I got started with the GOOD STUUUUUUFF. Naturally I started doing research and eventually watched the anime, then my love for this GREW, AND GREW . That is why I'm here answering your questions.

Growing up I watched the Dragonball Z ocean dub when it played during the weekends on our local broadcasting station. I was 11 or 12 (I believe the year may have been 1996 or so). The TV in my room had no cable at that time but I did have rabbit ears, and I'd tune in religiously to watch it whenever it was on.

After that I watched a few other titles, generally stuff on Toonami. But I wouldn't say I was a big otaku or anything.

What changed for me was when I started watching more things online due to our ever improving broadband connection. Specifically Clannad really got me hardcore into anime. I was only really into martial arts/shonen type of things before that, but after Clannad I really burned through a TON of romance/slice of life/comedy types of shows. My watched list probably quadrupled within a single year from that.

I fell into it as a child with Speed Racer and Battleof the Planets also known as Gatchaman. Years later i found Robotech and learned to love mecha goodness. Then as a adult i stumbled apon Ahh! My Goddess! which gave me an appetite for it but very little dinero to enjoy it. finally the internet rolls along and i find alsorts of wonderful animation to enjoy, not so sadly to say to many to list.

I remember the Ocean Dubs, they sucked, thank god the show was interesting. Night and day difference in watching experience compared to Funimation. I'm pretty much in an identical boat to you though, watched anime when I could wasn't huge otaku.

Ditto on the Clannad and internet thing, really opened up a whole new genre for me. I confess though I read more manga than watch anime now, more variety and usually more in-depth/interesting story and character development. I only really even watch shows anymore if there is a musical theme and I need the audio, or if it's a serialization that I've been waiting to see adapted to anime form. Even a lot of those get scrapped for me though, the anime versions of manga tend to suck hard, too much story gets cut and too much fan service gets thrown in.

Almost same for me, but it was my brother. Was waiting for a group in Final Fantasy XI when I started watching the episodes of Haruhi my brother had put on my computer just for the heck of it. It must have got me hooked because here I am 6 years later on the forums for a website dedicated to anime (and manga and drama)
