Why are People So Ungrateful to Fate Stay Night?
Posted 2/23/15 , edited 2/25/15
It's like everyone assumes Fate/Zero came before Fate Stay Night. Bunch of Urobochi fanboys saying "FSN sucks, watch Fate/Zero!" Seriously, it bugs me. Fate/Zero would've never existed with Fate Stay Night, so why do people hate on it? Seriously, you're all ungrateful brats that need to appreciate FSN.

[mod edit: Let's assume that this thread will contain some spoilers as an integral part of the discussion. If you aren't familiar with the franchise, or have limited familiarity and can't tolerate learning some things you might not know yet, this is probably not a good thread for you. That said, please do use some discretion when revealing significant info or events out of basic courtesty, and use spoiler tags in those cases --lorreen]

I liked the first FSN anime, but it could've been adapted better than it was. which is why I love Ufotable for doing just that.

F/SN created an interesting concept, Fate/Zero perfected it. The end.

It's not a matter of being ''ungrateful'', people just think Urobochi is leagues above Nasu in terms of writing.

I am a noob to the Fate series and so I only really see the series in a linear manner. I would still recommend people to watch FZ before FSN if you are anime-only as I feel it gives a much better introduction to Saber and makes her interactions with Shirou far more compelling. I don't see why people would hate on FSN right now anyway. The anime series has still got an entire second cour to develop the characters and create a satisfying conclusion. The ending to the first cour of FSN was also totally badass, I can't wait to see what happens to Shirou and Rin next cour.

ps, Just ignore me if you were referring to the 2006 FSN

I'm only referring to the recent unlimited blade works series as I talk about this, but I feel as though Fate/Zero does the whole battle to the death concept better. Stay Night isn't bad but I feel it hasn't reached the same level of action and tension that Zero had, also this is just me personally but I don't really like Shirou as a protagonist when compared to Kiritsugu.

I personally liked Zero better.

The best way I can explain this is that FSN to me is like a JRPG while Zero is like an RTS.

FSN seems to focus around a single group of protagonists primarily and involves them growing, getting hurt, and solving problems.

FZ focuses on all the characters at the same time and doesn't force any single moral view on you. It's hard to pinpoint who the protagonist really is. It's technically Kiritsugu, but he doesn't get nearly enough screen time or focus for someone who doesn't know that before hand to figure it out only from the context of the show.

It's because none of the F/Z lovers ever played the F/SN visual novel.

Some time ago I heard about F/Z and people were raving about it. Tried to watch it. Was totally confused and didn't finish the first episode. Then I heard that it was really a prequel to F/SN so tried to watch the first series. It just struck me as rather mediocre and didn't pique my interest at all in the first episode so I decided not to watch it. When UBW came out I decided to give the franchise another go. This time I really enjoyed the anime. It all made sense and it was so gorgeous that I can't wait for the second cour. After I've watched it all, I go back and try to make sense of F/Z.

But honestly, the whole F/SN premise is only mildly interesting from a fantasy perspective. I imagine it might have been better as a VN.

They're both kind of hokey, so I agree with the OP that hating on one but not the other is intensely silly.

The 2006 version had a really crappy uninteresting main character and too much focus on life outside of the main story. UBW is definitely correcting that and is the best of the three (I refuse to watch kaleidostar...) FZ is getting more love because it actually, ya know, focused on the grail war which 2006FSN did not. It has a MUCH more interesting main character, (in fact, the only reason UBW's Shirou is interesting is because everyone knows this path is the one that leads to Archer, and Archer (and Rin's tsundere personality) was and is quite arguably the biggest draw to the FSN franchise in general. Even Gilgamesh is more of a draw than Shirou or Saber.

In FZ, you have a number of interesting relationships, and even the Saber in that is far more interesting that the Saber in either FSN or UBW. You have her morals in direct conflict with Emiya's. You have her relationship with Illya's mother. And then there's a whole host of Servants that take bigger more prominent roles and wuite frankly, they're more varied. Caster, Gilles de Rais, is more interesting when he threatens to summon the elder gods from the bay than when Caster, Medea, kinda just chills at a her master's abode and cares for little else. Rider, Alexander, actually makes an impact on his master's life, rather than in FSN and UBW, where Rider, Medusa, is simply a temporary plot point. Berzerker, Hercules, is not very interesting except for the fact that he's OMFG difficult to kill, whereas Berzerker, Lancelot, is actually OMFG crazy, and his master went through some seriously fucked up shit to gain the power to summon him.

UBW is probably going to be my favorite of the three, but FSN is actually far more compelling than FSN.

It was a visual novel.

That's your opinion. And it is a matter of being ungrateful. They don't care that FSN came first. It's ignorance at best. I admit, the first series was rather mediocre, but still. F/Z exist only because of FSN. People should pay a little bit more respect to the original material.

the original FSN, the animation sucks and is atrocious.

Fate Zero is better, its better in animation and in plot/atmosphere.

The visual novel FSN is exceptional, but the anime is filled with terrible animation and way too much slice of life scenes.

Fate Zero objectively, is better. Its a better stand alone show.

FSN the VN is probably one of the best VN ever made, however, the anime adaption... leaves alot to be desired..

The first fate stay night was awful. I tried watching it. Big mistake. You have to be a complete fool to believe that FSN 2006 is better than zero just because it came first. It's not even relevant. The whole franchise has been kept afloat through games and visual novels up until Ufotable and Urobochi decided to grace it with their infinite awesomeness.

*Edit: Unlimited awsomeness
