I think I'd rather see him become her apprentice or something instead of there being a romance.
I mean, being around her often, he's bound to learn some stuff, right?
Interesting show though, definitely looking forward to watching more.

Really enjoyed the episode and looking forward to more. The way she solved the mystery was straight forward and somewhat obvious. Hopefully as the series progresses the mysteries will get more challenging. (As long as a Seventh Brave doesn't show up.)

I just find it amusing that he spritzed her like a misbehaving cat.

I thought so too, because of the description given, but he goes on to say their relationship isn't a romantic one and that she has a fiancee.

Damn Sakurako, you scary .

I'll admit it's drawn me in somewhat. The style is pretty nice and I always enjoy a mystery/horror mashup of sorts. Just hope that Shoutarou stops being a little bitch. It's clear that Sakurako can hold her own and will hopefully be an interesting character.

The whole "we're not lovers or friends, but we hang out a lot while she has a fiance" thing could used as a cheap plot device.

Curious what the age difference between them is too.

That's really my biggest concern. There's a bad habit in a lot of detective series to emulate Sherlock Holmes, where the protagonist treats everyone like an idiot. The difference is that Sherlock Holmes was clearly smarter than the people he was advising, whereas these series is to make the protagonist seem smarter by making everyone around them bumbling incompetents.

I'm not saying this is what this series will do, but...the first episode certainly had a lot of it. It was still fun, but it really was awkward seeing how dumb the police were acting throughout the episode.

The clue about the knot wasn't something most would recognize so I give the show credit there but the frothing which would be a big indicator could have easily been washed away in the water so I can forgive the detective for not giving such lack of evidence consideration. Even Sakura said the only way to confirm whether they drowned was by an autopsy. And given Japan's unsettlingly high suicide rate I can see why the police might jump to conclusions.

What do you guys think of the chemistry between the two characters? I'm curious, I found it to be somewhat cringe worthy, but I'll reserve juddgement.

The knot part I agree with. Now, as to the other...I don't know police protocol in Japan, but I would hope that suspicious deaths, even if they're likely suicides, would at least be *treated* as potential crime scenes, where they'd bring out a forensic investigator. Granted, it's supposed to be a small community in Hokkaido, so I suppose it can be assumed they don't have the resources to do so, but it seemed kinda dumb to me that they would be shocked at the possibility it might not be a suicide.

Then again, I'm not a cop. Maybe that sort of thing happens all the time.

Sakurako is lot weirder than I was expecting lol

Would like to know how narrator-kun and Sakurako met, and if Sakurako has a real job. Osteologists have to do something with that degree, right?

I liked the scene where Sakurako examined the human skull and gave insights into it, that seemed pretty legit.
The authoritative knowledge counterbalances the wackiness.

I thought the homicide investigation scene was pretty goofy, beginning with that technicolor natural history museum once she put on the gloves. Not sure how seriously I can really take it.

That said: just started True Detective; have to say so far I like Beautiful Bones better lol

I dunno, if Sakurako's gonna pick the forbidden fruit she might as well eat it

I didn't think it was bad. Actually, I think it could go somewhere.
The way she was poking his head during the butterfly bone scene must mean something.

I wonder if the one who wrote the synopsis spoil their relationship or jump the gun there.

I'm wondering the same thing. The only other possibility I can think of is them meaning girlfriend as in a friend who is a girl, but it isn't used that often, and then there's also the boy stating he wasn't sure if they were considered to be in a friendship.
