I don't believe in luck because I think people confuse it with skill in anime characters would worry about turning a certain age with an odd number that to them means oh your gonna be unlucky for a whole year. I don't know if you seen that Christmas movie I think its called a Christmas carol with this old man who goes baaah!!! Humbum!!! I can't always catch the word he's saying but that's what I say to luck! Go too hell luck stop raining on my parade luck is a superstition and my life is not guided nor directed by luck and unlucky events. You may not believe in God but is there as such thing as a bad blessing if good things keep happening to you because of luck that's similar to a blessing isn't it? Well there's no such thing as a bad blessing only curses and blessings and curses are a lot worse then bad luck. Bad luck just allows crappy things to happen to you. You stub your toe you get all wet after entering a coffeeshop, you get a big bill that's just one giant lie! People take advantage of you. Curses can be worse because they can inflict disease on ur whole family or relatives die one by one on a month to month timeline. I'm 25 I've been growing up through odd years of age and even years of age. I felt that anything that ever happened that was bad to me was just by accident or it was meant to happen further more when I ever I buy new cool technologies or game systems I have never ever experienced a defect like the other ones have. I had this Asian friend who told me I'm unlucky for simply not believing in luck and I don't have a girlfriend cuz I'm unlucky. I think that's a load of shit!

Well it depends on me.. To me it can go both ways.. It can be coincidence or luck...
For example its a coincidence that i found money..
To me luck is when you survived in an accident or in a horrible injury some reason

Same here for me if you survived an accident that's grace but I wouldn't call it luck. I don't even have an object that I call lucky like a good luck charm. I think this is a healthy discussion.

Well...it sort of depends on what one wants to call "unlucky" or "unfortunate". If one takes all necessary precautions and makes all necessary preparations in order to minimize the probability of an undesirable event, but through potentially uncontrollable variables like the behavior of others or pure random chance still experiences that undesirable event there's really nothing to call them but "unlucky" or "unfortunate". It was in no way their fault that the outcome was what it was.

One's biological sex, for example, is a matter of a universal roll of the die without the aid of reproductive technologies or sex-selective abortions. Barring those confounding factors whether you're born biologically male or female (or somewhere in between, or perhaps even neither) is just a matter of luck. If one later discovers they've gender dysphoria and are quite uncomfortable with their biological sex that's misfortune. People with gender dysphoria had no control over their biological sex at birth, and neither did their parents if no reproductive technologies were used. It's bad luck because the outcome is undesirable (they're uncomfortable), and it's luck because the outcome was the result of chance events.

There's luck in the world, but it's just another name for chance events whose outcomes are either considered desirable (good luck) or undesirable (bad luck).

Hmm this seems like this is an interesting discussion. I shall go more into my thoughts later after I look more into it.
My current thought is that luck is almost like a slang term nowadays used to describe something good or bad(unlucky) that happens to someone, but the occurrence is somewhat rare. Basically just strange coincidences. I plan to come more from a philosophical standpoint when I get the chance(it will most likely be way different than what I'm saying now). First got to finish some school work....no I'm not procrastinating
Example
Phil-"Hey Tony, I just won the lottery."
Tony-"Wow Dude you are so lucky."
or
Phil-" Well today I failed my driver's test, broke my glasses, had my wallet stolen, and stepped on gum."
Tony-"Wow Dude you are so unlucky."

So what do you call winning the powerball? Skill? If not luck

Luck is just like beating the odds at something...If you come out of a horrible car crash unscathed, then you are lucky because odds are you should have been crushed.

Luck is based on chance and not skill.

As said by the user above^^^
If you win the Powerball, that is luck, not skill.

I think what you are confusing it with is how people say it. It is obviously used as a throwaway word to explain favorable outcomes that sometimes aren't even based on luck. People are superstitious though and if something good happens when they do certain things, then they will start to do a ritual for good luck.

Technically instead of luck you might call it "coincidence" since two events are occurring simultaneously: your lottery ticket reads a given set of numbers and that same set of numbers is drawn. But that would just be pedantic.

Being lucky is basically having things happen to you that we construe as good.

Being unlucky is having things happen to you that we construe as ordinary or bad.

Each separate instance of occurrence is just as likely to happen as another, so the innate value of that occurrence is up to us to interpret. If we consider it good, it is good luck. If not, it is not good luck. There are also things that will certainly happen to a person eventually, and we sometimes interpret those very same occurrences as instances good OR bad luck, depending on how far along or how early along in life they happen.

Even death is unique since nobody dies exactly the same way even though everyone dies.

"Luck" seems to imply some sort of fate or predetermined thing. In that regard, I do not believe in luck. "Coincidence" is a better word.

I would say that a coincidence is some thing that's a possibility to happen but having something that turns out good for you by coincidence is luck.

I see how luck applies in videogames where they force it too happen and force it to be a reality because programming can do anything but I just don't see it. I like what all u guys have to say. And I see how ur defining luck and what it is about being a random chance of something good or bad happen to you. Let's take an old game for example where luck is lessliky to be the reason I did so good and more based on skill. The game of choice Space Cadette Pinball a bundled game with older Microsoft computers. Sure it was probably luck that I was able to randomly earn a 3rd ball but part of that was doing so damn good at pinball! In the end I made over 3,000,000 I have never been able to get that same score in other pinball games on other systems. But I learned a secret skill that I'm telling you so its not a secret anymore Its timing! So instead flicking the flickers repeatedly like everyone does cuz its human nature to be intimidated by the surprises of pinball. I stopped and thought about a new strategy which was to wait for the ball to come close then flick! The harder you pressed the fast it shoots! My skill got better at doing this as my score got bigger! Now is that more luck or more skill?
