I'm looking for some suggestions for Japanese metal bands.

So far, I only know Galneryus (power metal) and Dir en grey (not even sure how to categorize), and Concerto Moon (power/neoclassical).

My preferred metal genres are Power metal subgenres (folk, melodic, symphonic, etc) and technical/death metals.

I'd be glad for some suggestions!

I think the concept of Babymetal is cool and I can see why it's popular given the Japanese "kawaii" culture, but personally I couldn't get into it. But I do keep checking their stuff as it comes out since it's pretty original and I do think they have a lot of potential!

Versailles is pretty good. Their songs are symphonic power metal.

Aristocrat's Symphony - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU0uLZWqRdE *highly recommend listening to*

Prince - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwffI-hk688

If you like Versailles, you should check out Kamijo (singer of Versailles) and Jupiter (Versailles band members except Kamijo).

Don't really know any, but Kiba of Akiba may be considered a metal band, though technically they call themselves an Otailish Death Pop band.
They're probably most well known here as making the the Watamote op with Suzuki Konomi, they also just released their first full album last year, YENIOL.
Watamote OP
One of their other tracks is on their official youtube here along with a few others.

Also there's Babymetal which is a sort of fusion of Idols and Metal.

Ark Storm, X Japan, Liv Moon and Vamps (not to be confused with The Vamps) come to mind. They mostly fall between J-Rock and metal so not sure exactly what genre to classify them.

i had completely forgotten about concerto moon, i have a few of their cds, havent listened to any in a few years. the problem with japanese music is usually the singer is bad, and the vocals and vocal melodies arent anywhere near as good as the instrument part of it.

i usually stick to finland & sweden bands, by far the most & best, and then italy, norway, russia, if you dont know the best of the scandanavian bands just google it or email me on here & ill tell you my favs other than falconer, nightwish, kalmah, ensiferum, etc.

Power metal is my favorite genre, so I'm quite familiar with Scandanavian and North/Eastern European bands, I was just curious to know the Japanese counterparts to the genre. I have a huge power/symphonic/melodic/folk metal collection so I wanted to explore what other countries contributed to the genre. I'm actually quite pleased with some of the bands I've found, like Galneryus and Concerto Moon, for example.
