trust me, knowing a second language is great, sure it makes travel and job hunts easier, but if you want to have a conversation without others around you listening in, boom, second language. i speak english and french, and my japanese is rather rusty [took classes in high school] i want to become fluent in japanese, maybe one more for fun. i've got a friend who picks up languages easily, she's fluent in 5 and is working on a sixth language.

i think most people nowadays are at least bilingual, and i'm sure a few users here are fluent in 3 or more languages.

Monolingual (English). Took 5 years of Spanish in school, so I can kinda understand Spanish - enough to partially understand what people are saying on Spanish-language TV, at least. Currently studying Japanese on my own b/c I'm weeaboo trash. Memorized all the kana (except the archaic ones) and a few hundred kanji so far, don't know nearly enough vocabulary to really be able to say that I speak it, the most I can do is translate simple text or occasionally pick up some words and phrases when I'm watching the animu.

My question about Japanese subtitles in another poll was based on the notion that there would be CrunchyRoll users who would also be interested in learning the Japanese language in spoken and written form. There's been some support, but it's mostly lukewarm.

Multilingualism is fantastic. I fully support it, and I would like to see more demanding requirements to demonstrate second language proficiency in American schools.

I'm bilingual (English and French) and very glad to be so as I wouldn't have my current job if I wasn't

English is my first language, but I also used to be fluent in Danish and am steadily getting better at Japanese. Learning other languages has expanded what I can think. To some degree, I do think the limits of your language are a factor in the limits of your mind.
